Title: 5670 signal tubes with adaptor to 6922
Post by doogie on 07/09/22 at 05:31:07

Hallo,
Has anybody already tried this tube roll for the UFO amps?

I use this combo elsewhere in my system and it is really good ; the other option is a WE 396A with 6922 adaptor. Very clear and liquid sound.

I’m not saying different is better but I’m a tube roller from way back and I won’t stop when my amp is delivered!

Thanks

Yes, and it can be very nice, esp. for the price compared to "fancy" 6922/7308s. The GE 5670 is good but my favorite is the Tesla 6CC42.  Note however that there is often a synergy between the input tube and the rectifier so be prepared to roll rectifiers along with the input tube to get the best sound. The options for a UFO amp are vast so if tube rolling is your thing you're in the right place.

Very good, thanks. I didn't know about the rectifier synergy but it makes sense. I'm scanning the Forum with alacrity. Much to learn.

I just got adapters and moved my Western Electric 396As from my backup amp to my ZMA.  Sounds great and I didn't have to touch the gain adjustments.  The tubes are basically identical.

FWIW you can now get cryo'd 5670s:

I haven't really been tempted by the cryo tubes....until now.

Jerry, if you don't mind sharing, what other tubes are you using with the WE's? I also have tried those tubes but didn't care for them in my system.

Always open to trying new combinations.

Thanks,

Jon

The 5670 weren't my cup of tea either in the past. I really wanted to like them, but. . . . I'm not tempted to try the Cryotone version.

Jon,
I am using the Western Electric 396As, an expensive but nice tube. I only have one pair so I'm currently using them as the driver pair with EH6922s as the input tubes.  The driver seems to be more important than the input.

I'm doing a lot of tube rolling.  Currently have some Mullard EL34s in but will probably go back to TS 7581As...but I also have a quad of TS 7027As yet to try.  I am watching for a better set of EL34s.  The mullards I bought were advertised as "practically new" but arrived looking pretty tattered and I had to adjust the bias a lot to balance them indicating they are not even close to a matched quad.

If anyone needs some 5670 tubes I have 10 that all test strong on my TV7.  Let me know.

After experiencing great satisfaction rolling Wathen 6SN7 tubes into my 300B amp, I’ve been thinking about it’s red headed step-cousin, my 20+ year old STP-10. It came with fairly mediocre 6N3 preamplifier tubes. It’s had JAN GE 5670W’s from 1988 in it for awhile that work well. Oktyabr 6N3P-EV’s also from the 80’s didn’t seem to work as nicely even though they cost more. So I’m interested in people’s opinion on the Wathen 5670.
Now that it’s driving my old  601’s with new woofers & capacitors, I think the old girl might deserve better.

I’ve got it bad, I’ve got it bad, I’ve got it bad, Ralph
