Title: wire gauge for Zen Kit #1 chassis mounted tubes
Post by goso64 on 03/16/22 at 01:01:01

Hello,

This is my first tube kit, Zen Kit #1.  I am using ceramic chassis mounted tube sockets and will solder wires from the board to the socket.  I have a couple questions:

1. what is preferred wire gauge for this?
2. is there any advantage using shielded cable vs stranded copper vs solid copper etc.
3. what about the jacket of the wire - any thermal concerns that would steer me to a particular type of jacket?
4. Any concerns about noise with respect to wire length, should they be braided etc?

That's enough for now - your comments are greatly appreciated.

shortest possible length of 20g solid wire directly to the socket.

Longer wires cause you hum and grief. Grid stopper resistors should be right up into the tube socket.

Why not mount board under the chassis with the sockets exposed.

Bobc, thanks for your response.

I plan on experimenting with various tubes. If I mount the sockets to the board, I'm concerned I will stress the board over time with numerous insertion/removal of the tubes. So chassis mount is the current plan. The wires from the board to the sockets will be very short.

Thanks again
