Title: Severe Hum Common
Post by RoanWrangler on 03/07/22 at 01:53:20

Are all ZP3 delivered with hum and does everyone just accept it?  Reviews for the item are cultish, but all seem to mention problems or acceptance of hum.

Short wait now for a Torii Jr.  and starting to look at the next upgrade (DAC and/or phono preamp).

Will additional peripherals like a ZMC, ZSTAGE, etc increase the likelihood of unresolvable humming?

Hi RoanWrangler, welcome!

I have a ZP3 and it is absolutely quiet. Did you connect the phono ground to the ZP3?

My ZP3/ZMC doesn't hum.  And I am not in a cult.   ;D

Can't speak for ZP3, but my ZP1 is absolutely quiet. No hum at all. I can't believe Steve would upgrade to the next model, ZP3, and somehow introduce hum that hadn't been there in first model. If you read the white papers on ZP1 and ZP3, he makes it clear he threw out lots of designs precisely because of hum. Clearly, he was careful to design a phono stage that does not introduce hum.

Even the best phono pre will amplify hum it is fed, however. Could it be that you're using a cartridge prone to hum (like Grado) and that the ZP3 has more gain than your previous phono stage, so now you're noticing it? Or that your ZP3 is plugged into power strip/ ground loop is occurring?

Thank you for the quick responses.   Sorry if I mislead folks.  I am waiting for my first Decware piece, a Torii Jr., and don't yet have a ZP3.

No intent to insult anyone with the "cultish" descriptor.  Maybe I should have used some form of enthusiasm.  BTW I have joined a few cults in my life, Schiit, Tekton, Decware (soon), Harley Davidson:)

Internet forums/blogs are my only reference and almost every entry (even here) mentions hum issues.  It is good to hear that hum is not always introduced to a system with the ZP3.

Almost pushed over the ledge to order a ZP3 for 2024/2025 delivery.

I agree that the ZP3 is "associated" with hum but it rarely seems to be the actual problem.  It may cause hum sensitivity in other ways though.  In my case I thought I had ZP3 hum but it eventually was cured by rerouting interconnects.

Thanks guys.  Ordered my retirement presents this morning.  ZP3 and MRC1 on the way.  Plenty of time to address other upgrades while waiting.

No worries with the ZP3. Mine is fully tricked out and couldn’t be better.  Ziggy even made a case for it in Paduak to match the rest of the 25th Anniv equipment. You’ll love it.
