Great job Steve

Now just several months away here.

Typo on "Support Forums" link button.  Says Forms.

Is there a price for this yet?  I only saw the $399 deposit number.

Post by Lon on 02/04/22 at 18:15:02

From the deposit I would guess the cost is 3995. ;)

The new website's cart function is certainly different!

Makes sense.  Steve sure likes to keep us guessing though.  At least on this amp he labels tubes and controls.   :)

Post by Bluemage on 02/04/22 at 19:25:13

Here it is. Price is listed to the left ($3995), and options can be factored in on the right. IMHO, a lot of amp for the price! I ordered.

Tube choice is no longer an option in the cart as it was with the MKIV - is this something you can contact Sarah about as you get closer to a build date?

Looks like Steve updated the page.  He fixed the typo I noticed too.

Wow look at all those tubes. How important is matching tubes on that set-up? I'm already in too deep waiting for an UFO2.

Title: Re: ZEN TORII MK5
Post by Steve Deckert on 02/06/22 at 04:04:06

Tube matching on this model is FAR less of a thing.

On a TORII MK5 the only tubes that have to match are the output tubes, and only in pairs.  If the pair on the left or right channel don't match you will get hum.  Matched quads are no longer needed because the amp has dual volume controls.  Also matched sections in the 6922 input tubes and then matched pairs of those are no longer required.

Between the new phase inverter design that likes tubes instead of hates them, and the dual volume controls, tube matching on a TORII just became a breeze.

Steve

Thanks Steve,

"I'm already in too deep waiting for an UFO2." is a GREAT thing!! It began finding your audio forum.

New guy, here.  Didn't see a designated place to introduce myself, so this seemed like a good spot since I just ordered one of these.  :)

Hi, everybody.

Hello and welcome! I was just wondering when the ETA for that amp? I know it aint next week,, maybe the week after? lol

Post by Dr3wman on 02/08/22 at 16:07:46

Welcome Urbino!  This is a great place to bumble around, and a great resource to learn.  I also have a MKV on order.

Joey - I'd imagine 18-24 months at current rates/staffing.  I know the waitlist will be over 1,000 once it is fully updated, possibly closer to 1,200.

Title: Re: ZEN TORII MK5
Post by urbino on 02/08/22 at 19:27:37

Hey, guys.  Thanks for the welcome.

I don't know that there is an ETA, @Joey.  I knew it would be at least a year.  I should've pulled the trigger on one of these 3 or 4 years ago when I first started to, but I could never quite make up my mind entirely.

The staffing question is an interesting point.  Does anyone know if there's a plan to add staff to help with the backlog?  That's always hard to do, I know, because you want to do it without sacrificing quality, and it actually slows production down somewhat until the new person/people get fully trained and can function on their own.  And, of course, you also have to have the space and tools for more people.

Title: Re: ZEN TORII MK5
Post by piezoman on 02/09/22 at 00:20:10

In terms of production, 1 tech has been recently added and bring trained. I believe Steve has been going thru resumes to hire and train 2 more. It’s been hard to find candidates…..more likely due to really shitty govt antics to pay people to stay home and blank off which is only a preface to the #!!#%$! crooked leftist-communist wet dream of fundamental transformation of society.

Be ready to bend over and get rammed good without lube.

Impedance question:

On the previous MKIV an option was given for either a 4-8 ohm or 8-16 ohm.........I see this is no longer an option with the MKV. I assume this is because of the new design?

I ask because along with the HR-2.....I am considering the ZU Soul Supreme which is a 16ohm speaker and am not knowledgeable enough to know what to expect from the MKV I have on order in terms of it's ability to be compatible with various speakers.

The Soul Supremes are 16Ω, but Zu Audio sells loading resistors to change that.

I am curious if anyone on the forums has had each generation of the Torii (besides Steve of course). I would love to hear their thoughts on how the amp has evolved.

I'm still waiting to read any kind of review on the MKV. There's gotta be some folks out there running them!

Here's one that was just posted on YT by Thomas & Stereo!

Based on everything I understand with past reading, an email with Steve, and this review, I am more convinced than ever that this particular amp will serve my most important goals by a mile and should synergize well in my setup:

1. Versatility and tunability
2. Neutrality
3. Headroom

Game over/.  The real test will be in about 3-4 months.

Great review from Thomas.   As usual he doesn't give in to hyperbole.  It was great to finally hear a breakdown of the MKV.

I agree. A review like this is honest and straightforward. I despise reviews from "professional reviewers" in the mags and such because they all sound the same, and use the same brain-sucking, flowery,high-brow audiophiliac verbal diarrhea-of-the mouth, run-on bullshit.

Cannot wait for the MK 5!

Title: Re: ZEN TORII MK5

Brad - I fully agree.

If I have to hear one more time that something sounds "Organic" I may lose my lunch. At least for me that term does nothing to help me understand what the hell they are talking about.

Thanks for the heads up piezo, it was very thorough and very nice. I'm still on the fence though. Still can't decide between the MKV, or balanced monos, whether the UFOs, or 300bs.

That start up sequence on the MKV sure did look cool!

Title: Re: ZEN TORII MK5

Yup.

The man gets to the point, and he's very clear. Outstanding review, the kind that the other knuckleheads should learn from.

Yeah, I dig him and Guttenburg. Guttenburg's sincerity and gentle approach translates really well.

I'm 99% sure I'll stick with the Torii. I was just hoping to hear more about a more powerful low end that really stood out in juxtaposition with the UFO. Im sure it was there, he just focused more on the midrange differences.

Good thread, this and thanks for sharing Thomas’s review Brad.  I saw he had dropped a hint yesterday so I knew it was forthcoming. Very fairly done.

If anything, I’m beginning to feel less anxious about the SE34I.5 that I ordered.

Title: Re: ZEN TORII MK5
Post by ChJKy on 04/24/22 at 21:09:55

I have an MK5 on order as well and I am quite certain that I would enjoy it for a long time, but...

I too have been wondering about monoblocks instead of the MK5. I am curious about the possibility of using dual SE34I.6 AKA Rachel. The headphone jack, the line out and the bump up to 12 watts that way could be a real possibility.

Any opinions on that front?

Chris

I am sorry if this has been answered, I tried to see if it was addressed.

With the dual volume knob on the MKV, is the stepped attenuator still an option/possibility?

I didn't see it listed on the order page for the Torii...not sure if that would b be something Sarah could/would add.

Title: Re: ZEN TORII MK5
Post by Earthbound on 08/03/22 at 18:47:59

I don’t think so. I spoke to Steve prior to ordering and it came up with the csp3 I ordered. It’s not an option on the order form for the MK5 and it’s not on my invoice. I suppose if you really wanted it Steve could do it. I asked and he said for my needs, don’t bother with a stepped attenuator. Plus, as we age our hearing decreases differently in each ear.

Somebody mentioned the review done by Thomas and I have to agree, the guy is wonderful. He’s concise, points out pros and cons and compares sound to other types of amps. Makes it much more practical review when you can relate it to other sounds or equipment that you may be familiar with. He’s honest about what you are going to get and leaves the Like or Don’t Like more to the listener.

Title: Re: ZEN TORII MK5
Post by Dr3wman on 08/03/22 at 19:23:54

Thanks for the info!

I didn't think so, and actually when I had ordered my Torii (when it was still an MKIV) I had not selected that as an option, and only afterwards had considered adding it.

The tube choice option has also disappeared which leads me to believe unless you call and request it, it will ship with EL34s?    I had originally asked for KT66s.
