Title: Zen Triode with ESS AMT's?
Post by DJFreon on 01/19/22 at 21:35:57

Awaiting my SE84UFO for driving a pair of ESS AMT's.
Has anyone done this yet? The AMT's are regarded as a pretty fast responding HF driver.
They are now powered by 300B mono blocks but I'm assuming the SE84UFO will send them into hyperspace.

How sensitive are the speakers? Only concern might be if the 300B amps have a lot more power than a UFO.

The AMT is capable of 40 watts. Resistive 3.4Ω load combined with 99dB/W (4Ω) sensitivity. The 300B amps I use now are 10 Watts. I also have added 4 ohms of resistance in series. There is also a DBX 234 active crossover before the amp inputs. They sound pretty good but I think the ZenT will do better.

from the manual...

Because of the surface area ratio it potentially moves the airload at a very high velocity, 5 times higher than the diaphragm movement itself. The moving mass of the Mylar Diaphragm is already very low (compared with cones and domes) and the magnetic structure very powerful, this combination results in extremely high air volume acceleration.

I think those speakers will work fine with a UFO. I would say compared to a 300B amp in general the Zen is faster and more transparent and probably more extended  at the frequency extremes. The 300B is probably more lush and warm.
