Title: (Noob ?) Will good preamp help Zen  drive 87db?
Post by Rory on 11/06/21 at 20:24:14

Hi folks, apologies for the noob question, I searched around and couldn't figure this out.
I'm currently working with some MA Radius 270 speakers that I love and would prefer not to replace (87db sensitivity). If I used my NAD 325bee as a pre in front of the Zen triode, would that help the Zen drive those speakers to reasonable volume (not rocking out necessarily), or does the preamp not help in that regard? Thanks!

Edit: The source of my confusion came from this note under the 'ideal speakers' heading:
"a good tube preamp can really turn this amp on giving you more volume before clipping."

A preamp can add or detract from the amplifier's qualities, but 2 watts is still 2 watts.
