Title: Liionidas Open Baffle
Post by benzxc on 05/23/21 at 05:09:50

Hello everyone,

I have been very interested in the Liionidas Open Baffle with the Silver 10s and W15s.  However, I am a little unsure how one goes about connecting the amplifier for the W15s.

So my current setup is DAC -> SE84UFO -> Speakers.

My understanding is that in the Liionidas (or if I were to add any subwoofer or bass baffles), I need another amplifier for the W15.

Where would the bass/subwoofer amp be placed in the system?  My DAC only has one pair of RCA output so I am not sure where I would place that amp.  Do I need a preamp for this?

Thanks in advance for your help!
Ben

Hi Ben.

I completely understand your confusion with this. I was in the same position as you a while back trying to accomplish the same thing. I was completely lost, but forum member Palomino was able to walk me through it.

For now, take the DAC out of the equation.

First, from your SE84UFO left and right speaker POSITIVE terminals, run a single wire from each, with a RCA plug soldered onto the other end. Connect the RCA’s to the left and right inputs on the subwoofer amp (I use a Crown XLS 1002)
These wires will be run in addition to the speaker wire run to the Silver 10’s. You end up with two wires on each positive SE84 speaker terminal.

Then from the subwoofer amp speaker terminals, run left and right speaker wire to the W-15’s.

The subwoofer amp has crossover and volume settings to help get the W-15’s to match up with the Silver-10’s.

I hope this isn’t too confusing. It was hard for me to grasp at first. I don’t think I left anything out.

Good luck,

Geno

Hello Geno:

Wow, thanks so much for your detailed explanation.  Yes, it makes complete sense.  So for the wire from the positives of the SE84UFO's speaker terminals, any type of wire will do?

So alternatively, if I have a preamp with two RCA outputs, I can simply connect one to the SE84UFO and the other to the sub amp?

Thanks again,
Ben

(P.S. I think previously when we chatted you mentioned the ALNICO Betsys sounded really good in your system - I got a pair of them for my baffles about six months or so ago.  You were right, they sound really good.  They Betsys have been spending a lot of time in my system, need to get the Lii 15s some playing time too lol.)

Ben,

Use decent speaker wire. I’m using 16 gauge.

I don’t see why using additional outputs on a preamp wouldn’t do the same thing, but not sure.

Palomino suggested using outputs from a DAC as an alternative, but I tried that with mine, and it didn’t sound as good.

Tom, if you’re reading this, I hope you’ll chime in and correct me on anything I’m wrong about. ::)

Best,

Geno

Ben,
Yes you can use a preamp and rca cables to both amplifiers.
Adjust the level controls on both amps where the bass and mids/highs sound balanced and where you have good range on your preamp volume control.

Anytime you don't have 2 outputs you can use a Y connector, one for each channel.

Geno,
Is there a resistor in parallel with the speaker wire?

Lin, thank you very much.

Hi Lin. Thank goodness for some technical support!

Yep. I forgot that a resistor is soldered inline on the subwoofer amp RCA cables. Here is a photo of what Palomino recommended:

Thank you Lin!

Geno

Thinking about purchasing a pair to play around with.  I thought these came with a passive crossover to use with a single amp or am I reading their description incorrectly?

Thanks in advance.

Looks like there is only one set of binding posts.

It is kind of a pedestrian crossover with low cost components that could be upgraded.  Not by me because I don't trust my soldering abilities.

Any ideas on someone that could build a crossover?  I spoke to a cabinet builder and he told me he could build this for way less than the $2600 Lii wants for the empty baffle.  The drivers I would just buy from Lii but $2600 for the baffle seems pretty high.   [smiley=dankk2.gif]
