Title: !978 Stock La Scala Reccomendation?
Post by Robert Snelgrove on 04/26/21 at 16:05:28

Hi Guys,

On somewhat of a budget, Room is 2 car garage size, listen around 8 feet or so from speakers. Leaning towards the MODEL SE84UFO2 but open to suggestions. I listen to smooth jazz, Diana Krall etc.

thx

bob

Welcome.

An SE84UFO2 is a fine choice. Wood base, meters, no bias switch, and XLR input option.

If looks and meters are not as important, I would start with SE84UFO. I also like that the inputs are on rear instead of top plate.

When you say “stock”, does that mean that there have been no mods done at all?

If that’s the case, get in touch with ALK Engineering online, and get one of his updated crossovers. This will be the best money you’ll spend on your system.

The crossover comes ready to go, with fairly simple instructions on how to swap the old crossover for the new. If I did it with my old Fortes, anybody can do it. And man, what a difference. It really is like getting new speakers.

Geno's advise is spot on!

I have a pair of LaScalla's of the same vintage with the same crossovers.
They have been powered by a SE84 and can blow your ears off!

I have always wanted to hear a pair of La Scala's.

Thanks, Guys

I really like the way the La Scalas sound and would only try new crossovers if I could keep the AA originals intact. The ALK is an exchange only.

Not saying that they couldn't sound better tho!

DPC, do you have original crossovers in yours?

thx

Robert,

The capacitors in your original crossovers are over 40 years old. A safe bet would be that they are not functioning as they should.

You might want to at least talk to Al about what you might stand to gain with a replacement.

Trey Cannon who has been at Klipsch since 1991 told me if the are not leaking ( oil filled) and the speakers sound good to leave it be.  I would be open to a swap test but never giving up the originals just in case. BTW, I heard not so good things about the Crites products?

I’m sorry to have gotten away from your original question. I just wanted to make sure that you knew of existing upgrades.

Best,

Geno

Hey Robert,

I do not have the original crossovers.  Long lost somewhere.

My speakers came from our local university where they were used in a large auditorium. I had a local cabinet maker update them to the current inch and a half wall thickness on all surfaces.  Then I replaced all the drivers with new Klipsch speakers.

I use them in my home theater room along with a infinite baffle sub system.
