I remember a thread about this in the past, but could not find it. I’m looking for a way to help keep dust away from my stereo components. My house, for some reason, is particularly dusty. Seems like a few forum members mentioned using different products to help with this.

I put a cloth cover over everything when I shut down at night. Helps some.

Me, I just rub bear grease on everything. Keeps the equipment lubed and makes my hands soft too.😁

Donnie, I wish the dust in my house would be gone with the wind!

Archie, covering everything with a towel would take care of it. I used to do that, but got lazy. I just that minute got finished dusting all my components. Now would be the time to start covering them again. My stuff is scattered amongst several shelves, so it’ll take a little extra effort, but I’ll get it done.

So here I am waiting for my food to be delivered to my hotel room, as innocent as a lamb, and my named is dropped on some sort of animal husbandry sundries posting.

Yes, I was born in a barn, and yes we had cattle and hogs, but I have been out of the "family" business nigh on 42 years now! But no matter how hard I try, they keep dragging me back in!

By the way, maybe something like a tablecloth would be a nice looking way to keep the dust off.

I seem to remember reading somewhere about grounding equipment to keep the dust down. It reduces the static electricity.

Kind of like how you get cobwebs, just dust particles magnetically stuck to other particles forming a chain.

I read too much.

You may find these links helpful. I currently don't use but found your question timely because of the same issue in my small listening room. I think a combo of approaches is needed to mitigate:

Upgrade air conditioning filters
Room purifier as noted - turn on when not listening
Swiffer duster
Fly paper strips ;D

I use a de-ionizer, which I turn on every time I flip a record. I use a DC on my TT and have the de-ionizer pointed at the TT. It's done a lot to keep dust down and off the LPs.

Well, I finally dealt with my dust problem. This will take care of it, though maybe a bit prissy.

While the DIY guys like Steve and Donnie are building amps and speakers, I’m cutting fabric with scissors. Maybe I’m just a bit too much in touch with my feminine side… :o

I did find this cool concert poster online and frame it. Does that help me appear a little more masculine??? I guess not… [smiley=10.gif]

That’s what I’m gonna do Archie. Actually 2 covers. One for each rack.

Going into it, I really thought the separate cover for each component was a good idea. And the fabric. My brother came by and laughed and said “that’s the silliest thing I’ve ever seen!” So I posted it for a laugh😊.

I've struggled with the dust issue myself, especially given that a dog, and cat live in the house. I believe my wife would rebel against any type of sheet/towel covering draped in the living room.......... ;D but the HEPA filter idea might fly.

How about a HEPA filter fitted to a box fan to capture dust while recirculating the air in the room? I use HEPA filters in my hvac system but we still have a lot of dust distributed uniformly around the house.

Dust can be reduced but not eliminated. Before you treat the symptom here, consider some inevitability first. Most likely your house/listening room are not sealed. A surprising amount of dust enters through cracks in door seals and windows too. If have carpeting you have dust. If you own an indoor pet, you have more dust. If your house uses air ventilation for heating/cooling you have dust.
True ionizers will let dust drop instead of fly, but ultimately it must be captured. HEPA filtering machines are really good at catching dust, but must be placed in a strategic location so that air is being filtered especially in the area to be treated. Vacuum cleaners pick up dirt as they should but often spread dust everywhere. There is no escaping it even with a HEPA filter being used on the vacuum itself. Manual dusting can be effective for the most part, but I wouldn't recommend dusting wands or much anything of the sort, UNLESS you routinely clean them as you go along the job.
If you are going to vacuum a reusable HEPA filter, do it outside.
I am still on the fence about antistatic cloths.

My experience and opinions on this matter come from working at a museum, along with some previous jobs in janitorial services.

Do you have any HVAC equipment that is exhausting air from your home?

If you do and it runs continually, you may have a negative air problem.

This is caused by not enough mechanical makeup air and the system draws outside air in through any opening, no matter how small and the outside dirt comes along with it, since it is not filtered.
