Title: Mods to DM945's ... ?
Post by bhazen on 07/15/20 at 21:52:24

Hi all ... new forum member ...

I'm considering ordering a set of DM945 speakers. My initial interest due to their surface similarities to a vintage speaker I've always admired, the Dynaco A25 (large woofers in small box, no crossover, etc.) ... now, what I really loved about the A25s was their frequency 'dip' somewhere in the upper mids/lower treble, that rendered a lot of nasty-sounding CDs easier to listen to. (BTW I'd be running the 945s with a Naim integrated amp.)

I'd love to know if any 945 owners have ever compared the A25 to the DM945 ...

Were I to order a set, might I be able to have Steve insert a resistor or something into the circuit to lower the overall tweeter level a bit? ...

You should be able to cap the tweeter with something with the right number of uf (oofs) to tame it. There are plenty of threads here about doing just that on many of the speakers here.

Sorry I can't give any comparison to A25. What I can say is that with my Mini-Torii, the 945's are very smooth, I have never thought they needed any taming in the treble. From what I understand, they are known for being laid back, and offer an optional phase guide for those that want more detail. The smooth nature is one of the aspects that attracted me to the 945's and I have not been disappointed at all.
I will also add that build quality is incredible, far beyond what I have seen in similarly priced mass market speakers. I highly recommend the 945's for music.

Thanks for the info!! DM945 probably my next speaker. :)

This doesn't directly apply to your choice of speakers but your digital nasties could be digital jitter. It could be coming from your digital source (DAC). If the problem still exists with the 945's, your most likely solution is to upgrade your digital front end. Just food for thought.

Thanks, I've actually got a great CD deck. I was thinking more of Loudness Wars victim CDs.

Here's a fine resource to address the cd dynamic range issues: http://dr.loudness-war.info/

I really like the 945 with the phase guides.  I’ve added two Rel t5i’s for more bass.  Can’t say enough good things about the combination.  Tremendous clarity and the midrange is the best.
