Title: New Robert Johnson photo comes to light
Post by Geno on 05/22/20 at 02:19:26

An unknown photo of Robert Johnson has recently surfaced. Evidently, his half-sister, who was a teenager when he died in 1938, had the photo locked away for some 80 years! (she is in her mid-90’s now). She has just finished writing a book about her remembrances of him.

WOW, Geno! Just when I thought I had seen every picture ever taken of RJ, you show me a new one. Thanks!

Somewhere on one of my numerous computers is a picture of the front of the studio where he made most of his recordings...Dallas...Houston? I don't remember, but I think Dallas.  If I ever get all my stuff in one place (an increasingly remote possibility), I'll post it.

Hi Randy. Find the other photo of him with the cigarette in his mouth and compare it with this one. Taken the same day!

Very interesting reading, is that H.C. Speir operated a mercantile and record store in downtown Jackson, MS (my hometown) in the 20’s and 30’s. He acted as a talent scout, and auditioned local talent. The ones he thought were good enough, he would arrange for them to be recorded with one of several major recording companies. The greatest bluesmen in history auditioned for him - Charley Patton, Skip James, Son House, RJ, etc. So he was responsible for these greats being recorded - and the rest is history.
