Title: Cartridge Set Up
Post by Tal on 07/21/19 at 21:52:14

Does anyone use a alignment tool or protractor to setup cartridges? If so, which one? Recommendations? Cartridge is a Ortofon 2M black on a Rega P3-24 TT.

I looked at the DB Systems alignment protractor ($50). However, I know there are more expensive options such as the Pro-Ject Align It. There are also various protractors that can be downloaded from VinylEngine, etc.
The DB System protractor seems to have good reviews, and $50 is not so bad.  I would prefer not to spend $$$$ for a protractor. But would be willing to spend sa little more for something like the Pro-Ject Align It, considering I would potentially use it several times

Get a Feickert Universal Protractor and be done with it. It works with all carts and will produce the best sonic results. It's pretty easy to use too.

If you align your cart with this protractor and keep your VTF at recommended levels, you'll also get better stylus life. So longer stylus life, fewer retips.

Or go big and get this device which really is magic when it comes to true precision vinyl related alignment/configuration.  It is pricey, but worth every penny!

Just get a Geodisc and a Shure cartridge force gauge. Set the anti skate by sight and enjoy the music.

Ha!  That will certainly not suffice for the OCD and “left side” brainers. But for all others, it will be just fine.

Thanks for the input.
HK - The Feickert looks like a good choice, although more than I intended to spend.
Jeff - I may have to pas the analog magik. Its above my skill set :P

Hi Tal,
I came across a used Feichert Universal Protactor and it has done all the tricks for me.  It is easy to use and does everything right.  Definitely increased my listening hours for sure.  Good luck sir!

That's great Tal.  And now every new cartridge on any table will be a snap.  You can also check spindle to pivot distances with ease as well.  Happy Listening!
