Title: 6SN7 to 6922 adapters
Post by armstdav on 12/30/18 at 23:39:11

I posted this in the Torii Mk IV forum but it doesn't seem to be getting much traction there, so I thought I'd try it here:

Has anyone ever tried using 6SN7 tubes with 6922 adapters in the Torii Mk IV? I have a crap ton of nice NOS 6SN7s left over from previous preamps and, to be honest, I love the tube. It would be great to try them in the Mk IV.

Here's an example of an adapter:

I recently purchased some 6SN7 tubes to try in a new amplifier (Canary Audio) I obtained recently that was designed for those tubes.  I have never had a need to own this tube type prior so I cannot offer any data relative to their use in a Decware amplifier.  It is a rather unique use case to adapt them to a Decware amp using the referenced adapter, so you may not find anyone with experience in that regard.

That being said, electrically there is nothing to preclude you trying it and using your own ears to determine its prudence.  Based on the electrical specifications of the 6SN7 tube type, they are more robust than the 6922 so no harm in giving them a shot in your Torii.  Whether they offer any sonic benefit/improvement is the question.  I would be very interested in your findings.

And if they don't work out, and you are not interested in them continuing to collect dust, I might be willing to purchase them from you to try in my monoblocks.  Currently I am running some Sylvania's but wouldn't mind tube rolling some others brands.

I have considered this adaptor for some time now. I had the Schitt Saga Preamp for a spell with a Tung-Sol 6SN7 (don't ask how many pre's I've had in my Listening Room~I can finally live with a vintage ARC LS-2B MkII, for periodic bone crushing moods from my ZMA), nice tube and wondered with the 6922 adaptor.

armstdav, please let us know what you think. What NOS 6SN7's do you have. Some RCA's?

This could open up another path of input tube rolling. Eagar to know your impressions 2 weeks from now or 2 months. Tube rolling, especially the input tubes, are my thing!

Well, I just ordered the adapters so I'll let y'all know what I discover. Happy new year!

6sn7 one of my favorite tubes. I'd love to hear how it works out
Cheers

Here's another adapter. I've seen these up close. Very robust.

Funch,
That is a very nice looking adapter! Here is a video with a closer look, including the solder jumper to configure the heater for Pin 4 or Pin 5.

I might pick up a set as I have an extra pair of Ken Rad 6SN7 tubes that would be run to roll on the ZMA.

I just bought a Garage 1217 version to check out.   Very nice indeed.   Unfortunately I don't think it will work.   It has pin 4 (or 5) from the Noval to pin 7 on the 6SN7  and pin 8 (6SN7) to p9 (Noval),..   On the Noval, Pin 9 is a ground pin NOT a heater return.  The way this is configured,  your pulling hot from one side of the heater transformer and then grounding it as opposed to connecting back to the 'other' side of the trans from which it came.   Steve would have to confirm,  but I think it's a no go.    Was a little bummed when I figured that out.  Glad I didn't plug it in first :(

Talked to Jeremy w/Garage 1217.  He agreed that unless the heater was running DC (not AC) then it's a no go and you will have to cut the 9/7 pin trace and jumper a wire from 7 to 5 (noval).

This adapter would (should) however work with the ZP3 (12au7) which in fact does use a DC heater supply for the tubes.   I believe that it is Steve's only amp to do so though.

Nice,  they are wired correctly  4>7 & 5>8.    Those Garage1217 are really for 12au7 conversion or 6DJ8 types ONLY if the heater is DC.

I'm going to rewire/jumper mine to work and try it out.  I have a nice stash of 6SN7's from previous amps and pre's,..

Finally had a chance tonight to install the Tube Depot 6SN7 to 6922 adapters. They work perfectly, and so far I like what I'm hearing, even running with current production Electro-Harmonix. I think the lower gain versus the 6922/6N1P may be a factor. Gotta dig out all my NOS 6SN7s.

The Tube Depot adapters seem to be the way to go rather than the Garage 1217s, at least with the Torii. No rewiring necessary!
