Title: signs you need something in addition to zp3?

When do you know if you need additional Decware to go with your ZP3 such as the ZMC1? Ill be using a Ortofon black mm2.

Also, how do you know if the cables you are currently using are going to work as it seems tube gear is more vulnerable to interference?

The Ortofon Black is a Moving Magnet cart and has an output in the 5 mV range which is well suited to the ZP3.  Moving Coil carts have outputs about 1/10 that amount and require a Step Up Transformer (SUT) such as the ZMC1.

Steve recommends using shielded cables between the TT and ZP3.  I found that cable routing can be critical and more important than shielding.  In my case, once I got my cables away from my electrical outlets, noise was reduced dramatically.  Cables near power cords don't seem an issue for me.  Transformers can be a source of noise too.

pay attention to the grounding and use shielded IC's.  you should be able to eliminate all unwanted noise.

no step up required for 2m blk.  the zp3 works great with MM carts >5mV.
i had a blk, but also had a blue at 5.5mV that i liked even better than the blk.

I happen to use 2m black and this is a very good cart for a zp3 with no sut. Love the sound but will try a mc and a SUT when I need a new one.

I'm using a Bronze which I believe is the same output, and while I don't "need" the zstage (copper foils), it adds some great weight. I prefer to always use it with the zp3.

So when you are rolling tubes can you change out just the front 12AX7 or do you change out both 12AX7 tubes? And do those front two tubes need to be the same brand?

According to Steve, all three spots for the 12A tubes are capable of using different tubes, that is there is no need for matched pairs or even the same brand and type in the two 12AX7 spots. So . . . experimentation with different brands etc. is possible.

I think the front tube makes the biggest impact.  I know it is the most sensitive to noise effects from vibration and RFI.
