Title: Kind of Blue recording
Post by bikehappy1 on 04/13/17 at 16:57:43

I listened to Kind of Blue last night on my new Torii. The snare drum didn't sound right. It sounded like there was a small hiss mixed in with it. Has anyone else heard this? My other cd's sounded great!

Hi bh,

What are you listening to: original LP, reissue LP, stereo cd before pitch correction, stereo cd after pitch correction, SACD, mono cd, K2 cd, 32 Ultrabit Cd, Dual Disc CD/DVD? :) Where are you hearing the snare "hissing" sound, every track?

I put the Dual Disc version on for variety (haven't played this one in a while) and am listening to the DVD side (48kz/16 bit, on my Cambridge Audio CXU, playing into my Taboo Mk III and Audeze LCD2 headphones) and the snare sounds as it always does to me. There is a sort of sizzle sound which is a ride cymbal that Jimmy almost always plays, it's sort of his signature to have this sprightly ride going on . . . But I don't hear a "hissing" per se. Could it be you're hearing more resolution to the sound now with the new amp and you're hearing that ride sizzling along with the snare?

Hey Lon,
I'm pretty sure I was listening to an old cd without the pitch correction. It's my Sweetie's cd (no case). I wikipedia'd the album and found out it was recorded in 58 or 59 with many reissues. I listened to the compressed version on my work itunes and could hear the same hiss. With the new amp, the sizzle was so loud, it mingles with the soft snare drum sounds. I heard a band called Phronesis yesterday while searching for contemporary jazz music. Pretty cool. Thanks so much for responding.

It's been so long since I have heard that original cd and I don't think I have a copy of it any longer to check, but I'd be very surprised if there was a loud hiss on the snare sound on my old copy. Curious! Try a more recent Columbia cd, not only is the first side at the proper speed but the sound is much better.

I was recently looking at downloading a super hi resolution recording because I’m curious to see if I can hear any difference between that, a flac file and a compressed iTunes file. I’m looking for a recommendation on a great jazz or jazz fusion download. Recommendations?

Usually this is DAC-related, in my experience.  Many DACs get this sound wrong.  What DAC?

(FWIW, I have far too many redundant copies of this album...  but I still love listening to it!)

My DAC is the Marantz SA8005 SACD/CD player which should be a decent dac.
