Title: New Diffuser Design
Post by Steve Deckert on 04/07/17 at 19:26:52

Was going through some old pictures and found a diffuser design that I never got to complete past the first prototype.

I have decided to post them here where they might inspire someone.  While these are calculated for small cardboard tubes, it could easily be scaled up for larger tubes.

In this design each well has it's own divider vain (the walls of the tube) and instead of setting the face flush and creating varied well depths I choose to make each tube the actual length and flip it upside-down for simplicity.

On scaled versions with say 1.5 inch ~ 2.0 inch tubes I would likely experiment with fiber-fill in the tubes.

So, that's your seed... let me know if anything grows!

-Steve

You can see in this rendering where I put the light straight on that even the light is diffused as a perfect hemisphere. I'm sure it will treat high frequencies the same way.

I remember us talking about those - in fact, just last year I was already revisiting that idea, and shopping for 2" PVC square tube. I know they make it, but nobody makes it inexpensively. I can actually get steel square tube for less!!

Maybe I'll try the round tube, though I feel there will be a a bunch more absorption due to the round shape of the diffusers, they should however diffuse quite well.

Yes, the round will diffuse/diffract far better.  I am willing to bet the near field performance is superior to a standard vertical diffuser. A regular diffuser really doesn't develop an in tact hemi-disc until you get about 10 feet away from it. Most listening rooms are not 20 feet wide. The absorption would be ideal for most rooms which desperately need it, yours not included of course.

If you make one from cardboard tubes it will sound far better.

Here is the paper tubing at a pretty good price.

If they were a bit longer, and they'd need to be 1" ID.  That's a great find to experiment with some wall art though.

Woah, check out what I found!!

Now if I can just find a larger bulk of them. I can work with square cardboard tubes!

Well, the square tubes are a bust. I can't find them in any quantity at a decent price.

I'm casually running the numbers on round tube to see what I can do with $100 in materials.

PVC pipe is expensive, unless you knew a plumber who would give you his extra ends. Or if there was a decent size construction site with lax security....
