I just received a zbox and put it between my OPPO 95 and my Rachael.
First impressions, lowers volume quite a bit.
Shrinks soundstage and has caused a loss of detail and dynamics.
Tried 12ax7 and 12au7, 12au7 sounds better.
I just ordered a gold lion 12au7 and will try that.
My system sounds spectacular without this and was wondering if it is just a case of cheap tubes and serious break-in needed.
Thoughts?

I think you need to let what little there is to the ZBox break in more. Give it a few days and I think 12AU7 tubes should give you the best chance of great fidelity. . . .

I know the Rachael sounds worlds better than when I first received it. I am waiting on my TORRI Jr. that should be here soon and will give the ZBOX some time before it arrives and see if it improves. I will be getting the new Gold Lion tube monday hopefully that helps.

The Rachael likes 2.5 volts for full output. You could try the 6N2P tube in the Rachael for more gain if the volume is too low for your taste after burn in.

The 6N2P did raise the volume and give more detail and soundstage.
Why didn't I think of that. :P

Holy wow.
With the 6N2P and the new Genalex Gold lion cryoed ecc82 12AU7 that I just received today my system sounds incredible.
I was ready to unplug this because my set up sounded pretty awesome as it was but to my surprise (I am learning that I should not be surprised with anything Steve builds) it sounds even more amazing.
Before I changed to the 6N2P's it crushed the soundstage and really hurt the detail but now, WOW, that's a technical term for I am hearing things I love. I never thought I could afford a system that sounds as incredible as mine does now. I honestly have never heard a better set up in my life. The Decware gear with the pure audio project Voxativ speakers is so perfect " to me".

Isn't it great when something sounds beautiful and you can actually look forward to it getting better, crazy.
Listening to Kenny G right now, amazing.
In my room, had to ask him to move so I could adjust the volume ;D

Well about a week with the TORII JR now and very impressed.
Think I will be selling the ZBOX though.
I want to do some other things, different tubes, and kinda need the funds.
