Title: KT66 vs. EL34 in TORII JR Post by beowulf on 08/04/15 at 22:23:10 Has anyone determined/inquired whether or not the KT66 can be used in this amp? |
Title: Re: New TORII JUNIOR amplifier for Summer! Post by Steve Deckert on 08/05/15 at 03:31:21 The Reason EL34's were selected for the TORII JR is because they seem to be the best sounding and have the most power with the custom UFO ultra-linear transformers. TORII's have always been an EL34 based design until the MK4 where I felt the better linearity and lower gain of the KT66 was a better fit. In the TORII JR I liked them all, but since the bass is equally tight with all the output tubes I tried, the CCE aka Hazen Grid Mod became more apparent than ever so EL34 is the stock tube in this amp. [color=#ffffff]The amp uses a fixed bias set to the ideal mills (40) for this particular amp using EL34's. There will be a single screw adjustment for bias making it possible to re-bias the amplifier for tubes like the KT66 or 6L6 or KT77. The advantage of making it a fixed bias design is the ability to get the tube dialed in much tighter and without the heat related drift of a potentiometer. A more purist approach. I'm over half done with the owner's manual as I write this. :) |
