Anyway, this is a picture I took of my friend Mer. She is a singer and all around awesome person. At the time she was singing with a jazz band at the Cincinnatian Hotel and I was taking a lot of photographs in the studio, so we decided to do this shoot. I used to record with the Rode microphone, but it was sitting around so seemed perfect as a prop. We listened to a lot of jazz during the shoot, particularly Nina Simone. This is one of my favorite pictures from the day. |

The wood was 100+ year old oak I rescued from a barn, the transformers and other parts were all 50+ years old and picked off eBay. I didn't have a design or plans, I just sat down and built it from scratch over a weekend. My Dad still plays it today.  |

The woods give this such tone and sustain! And the pickups give you so much variety. |

My one is a mega rare left handed version. Very rewarding guitar to play, very accurate as accoustic, `sfunny you`re like on your best behavior, it reveals all the little nuances. Plug it in and it`s a job not to just play blues licks. 8-)

Found this on the net years ago with no credits. I saved it, obviously. Look at Jimi's triple Marshall stacks, and realize that even the Who did not do this yet (Guinnes Book Of World Records reference The Who held the record for the loudest band, until Led Zeppelin took the spotlight away from them.). And the bass set up, I recognize as Guild Quantums, which used 2 fifteen inch JBL D130s in each cab. Those JBLs were probably the most extremely bitchin' speaker available in 1969 and he is using twelve of them AND what TeH HELL is that amp stack he is using!?!. Rock and roll!

Jimis stack is impressive and with all the amps at max , it`s said he played the amps and not his guitar. Pete Townshend used Hi-Watts ( I used to know all that stuff) I was at the Charlton gig, it was the biggest football ground in the country in black and white days being built in a natural valley ( called "The Valley"). Before safety standards the crowds would fill the grass banks and could hold well over 100,000. Lou Reed was on the bill as well. It was a great evening. Didn`t know Zep topped the DB record.  I used to love seeing Keith Moon somersaulting onto the stage. :) |

I ran into Eddy many years ago, I'm assuming in the throws of Heroin addiction - he looked like a homeless guy, missing teeth and emaciated. I'm hoping he's still sober. I did everything but bend the chassis and build the case (had it as spare). I did however design and laser engrave the faceplate and logo myself.   Here is another one I helped build, that's on tour somewhere.

My current all around amp, one that I didn't expect to love, but that is so flexible and rich sounding I can use it for all my guitars, my basses, and my combo instruments (Bass VI, Jaguar "Bottom Master," Schecter Ultracure VI). Has a tubed preamp and a digital amp section, would never have thought I would like that combo but it has all the hallmarks of my '59 Bassman LTD reisssue AND so much more, sounds like an all tube amp for the most part from whisper to roar, but less tube rush.   This line didn't sell and was pretty soon discontinued. Shame, as they are really something. I may pick up one of the Bassman TV Two Tens one day. |

This is a 1958 Magnatone Custom 280 - the same model amp that Buddy Holly is known for. I rescued this one, paid a bit too much for it, but it was in some guys often flooded basement. The cabinet (which are cheap to begin with) is swollen and separating at the seams. The guy was jamming on the amp really loudly, totally didn't know that he had two smashed and shorted tubes. The "awesome distortion" he was getting was the amp basically farting out with only one output tube going. Pretty much right after I took these photos, the amp collapsed - the cabinet just disintegrated leaving me with a pile of parts on the desk. I'm going to build a nice hardwood cabinet for it, even make a custom logo plate on the front (laser etched if I can find another laser engraver to work on). I've already repaired the electronics and the amp is working - just needs a new box to put it in.    |

It's so heavy I don't lug it upstairs for my bedroom use, but I have a handful of other amps I can use up there, including this beautiful pair of amp and combo, another odd ball, a prototype of the "Jazzmaster Ultra Light" series that only has one channel and no effects unlike the production models (which have onboard effects and a distortion channel). Not the best for rock etc. but with the treble rolled down and a neck picku it gets a great clean jazz sound, which is what I'm most about. |

I have so many discs, that's what I'm using and will use with the DS. A friend of mine is burning some hi res material to a few dozen DVD-Rs for me that will play in my PWT. I've played a few others have sent me, sounds amazing. But so does Redbook on my PWT and SACD on my SACD players. That Cassandra Wilson track is on this, her latest release, which I bought the day it was released.  Great cd. |

Especially on songs like the cover of The Kinks' You Really Got Me and of course the iconic Eruption. For me VH was the epitome of a hard rock Super Group. As time went on I came to like the exact opposite of the clean sonic perfection of EVH and leaned more towards the "fun" Ramones and "introspective" Joy Division type of groups. But IMO VH did some excellent work in the late 70's and early 80's. |

Some of mine,scavenged from old consoles are not nearly as elite, however. I did notice your Army surplus (possibly like mine?) machete. I have two, very similar, I use almost daily. Both are stamped "US Army 1943." They are high quality steel and keep an edge well. Anyway, I have jealousy issues with your garage tubes, now. To Lonely Raven: I checked out that site and actually ordered several albums. Just previewing with my HD 600 Sennheisers, listening to clips of songs I had recently heard, I could hear clearly that those tracks were WAY better than average and by a fairly large margin. I am reminded of listening to my old B&O system, straight off the pre-amp from the tangent tracking turntable. I really wish that turntable had lived. Thanks for the link. Oh, I forgot to mention; I bought some right away. Go ahead and laugh, but some albums benefit from HD more than others. I bought the new Eric Clapton, Michael Jackson, Thriller, a compilation of Marvin Gaye hits and The Doors instantly. |

Give it a shot! :) To help you get started, the last four pictured are; Duke Ellington: amazing composer, pianist and especially bandleader, one of my heroes, I have literally hundreds of discs with his music. Barbara Lea: a very little-recorded singer of the second half of the 'fifties mostly. Most famous for a record with Bill Evans at the piano. Django Reinhardt: French Gypsy guitarist, an amazing original who has been an inspiration to so many musicians. Paul Whiteman: Bandleader who had the first million selling record, in' the 'twenties. Pretty square by our standards today, but his fame allowed him to give work for years to some of the greatest soloists of the 'twenties and 'thirties such as Bix Beiderbecke, Jack Teagarden, Mildred Bailey and many more. Had a radio show for decades and at the end of his life in the 'fifties a tv show. |

Got it from ebay for 100 dollars, and it uses an Alumitone pickup that costs 90 bucks, so it was a steal in so many ways. A bit rough in the finish department but plays like butter. Lined fretless neck, and has a hollow body with a center piece of wood so little feedback. As with all wishbasses (I have another, a solid body fretless with I kid you not a neck like a contrabass violin) the sound is in the fingers. . . one pickup and one volume control only so you have to work it. That said this plays very easily and you can get all the Jaco sounds one might want (personally I shy away from them) and also can get contrabass violin sounds (my target). A bargain. |

I had read about these a few years ago but forgotten about them. That man fascinates me. And yes, this bass sounds really good, that Alumintone pickup is well-placed and meaty, and the neck is surprisingly easy to play. I've wanted a hollow bodied fretless bass and this one does nicely, and no one else bid on it so 100 plus 25 shipping is an incredible price. Still playing around with the action and intonation a bit but put through my '63 Fender Reverb head reissue with just a little bit of mix and dwell it has a great resonant sound to it. Might sound thin with a small amp, but I have that Fender Bassman TV Fifteen which is 300 class D watts with a 12AX7 in the preamp, and I also have been running a Glass Damage two tube pre-amp/multi-effect (mostly set to bypass) . . . no thinness there. Wishnevsky is now making guitars as a take off of J.J. Cale's old Harmony (back off the hollow body to avoid uncontrolled feedback) with Alumitone pickups. . . I bet these are really good. I missed out on one on ebay that went for 125. . . I was on the road when it went into the final minutes, away from my computer. I read that his factory had a fire so he may be slow to make new ones. But I'm patient. . . have plenty of other guitars to play. But. . . I want one.

Since I bought the ZTPRE to put it and the Taboo Mk IV into my main system I had to remove my Rega RP3 and ZP3. No room on the shelves for all this! And the entire system and the use of headphones is so monumental that I only miss them a little bit. One of these days I'll swap those components out. . . but. . . I can't stop listening to my cds! |

Color isn't quite clear in this photo, it's a green/blue with an oak clear finish top and dark bronze hardware. |

She helped out in the earliest of days when Decware was just starting. She re-coned a lot of speakers with me back then. I met her in the pre-Decware days when I was working as a finish carpenter and she was a painter on several of our jobs. She was the one who talked me into playing the drums so we could jam and that started a 10 year recording thing on Thursday nights down on the river. Fun times! The garage where this picture was taken had the entire ceiling covered with speakers hanging from wires. There were well into 800 speakers hanging in there and more in the house. They came from everything I'd ever pulled from repairing speakers over many years. I could go out there and find a frame, the magnet I wanted, and scratch build a woofer, midrange or tweeter of any type in a few hours any time I wanted. Without this massive stash and the 1000's of cones, spiders, and voice coils I used to stock, none of the massive number of experiments I did could have taken place. |

This is the most recent, a hollowed out mahogany bodied Strat with a Warmoth compound neck, mahogany with ebony fingerboard, and DiMarzio 36th Anniversary PAF humbucker pickup set that is also coil tapped with the tone knob. Rich, resonant sound from either humbucker or single-coil, and a beautiful guitar. |

This is the other one I bought, a modded Fender Flame Maple Top Custom Telecaster where the humbuckers were replaced with Seymour Duncan Phat Cat P90s (a P90 in a humbucker shape) and is also outfitted with a Graph Tech Ghost piezo bridge pickup which allows you to blend the Phat Cats with an acoustic tone, or just have either the Phat Cat or an acoustic sound. I can get all kinds of jazz sounds from this one. It has a mahogany back and set neck, and the fingerboard radius is a very flat 15.25" which took some getting used to but I can bend chords on this which is fun. Probably the most beautiful guitar I own in person. It's stunning! |

I have read that she grabbed her dad's bass at around three years of age and began trying to do what Dad (who is no slouch, btw) was doing and, in my view, the world shifted around her. I have only found snippets of her new band on youtube, but I have also read that they are recording and a release is imminent. One of the many wings is devoted to music/artists and while there were too many picture worthy exhibits, this one caught my eye. Featured here is Jimi Hendrix’s vest that he wore at a concert in the UK as well as his Marshall Speaker cabinet. You can zoom in to read the explanatory text of the exhibit. |
