Title: Places that produce NEW analog master tapes
Post by Steve Deckert on 05/05/14 at 19:48:36

This thread will be full of links to places where you can find audiophile quality taps to listen to.

Of course there is ebay... but ebay requires a learning curve and should probably have it's own thread.

Places that produce NEW analog master tapes for sale is the topic of this thread.

I'll start the list. I've not purchased from any of these (yet) as I'm still working out my tape setup and working on my budget. I'll add more, and any descriptions as I purchase from these shops.

Yarlung Records

Ultra Analog

Opus3 Records - I do have some DSD from them, and they are *fantastic* recordings.

I purchase quite a bit of new open- reel tape:

ATR Master Tape
http://atrtape.com/

Best price I have found is through Vintage King
http://vintageking.com/catalog/product/view/id/7881/s/atr-magnetics-studio-master-tape/category/10/

RMGI
http://splicit.com/rmgi_tape.html

Ampex/ Quantegy 632 seems to be readily available and although it is not as good as the ATR/ RMGI offerings, it is inexpensive and works perfectly for my open- reel tape trades, especially if recording @ 7.5 IPS.

Dave, I just get done bragging about paying 1.42 per CD,  then go to your link....Are you smoking Crack or something?...hehe.  $600 for one recording!  Oh well, to each his own.  If I were spending 600 a pop...my buying would slow down considerably.  Mark.

Hehe... if he was doing crack we can be pretty sure he couldn't afford it either!

In fairness though, it IS a live two track recording at 15IPS so you get two 10.5 inch reels.  They are also hand copied at a 1 to 1 speed from the session master.  The blank tape and reel runs $200 leaving $200 per reel to make it perfect. It helps to realize that these are direct to tape masters with no compressors, limiters, mixers, or anything else... just great tube microphones going through custom tube electronics directly into the tape head of some of the worlds finest machines.  This is as close to the real music as you can get without being at the recording personally.

I tried to explain this the other day.... when listening to digital we tend to localize the instruments because the sound of those instruments is what draws our focus.  When we listen to these master tapes, we tend to localize the people playing the instruments because the emotion is so strongly communicated that it is the emotion that draws our focus... the very creative force that underpins the music.

I've seen DSD albums go for $50 a pop.  This is 12 times that amount.  Is it twelves times better... possibly. Does that make it worth it, probably not. Would I still buy one, probably.  Why?  Good Master Tapes are special, you don't need very many (You can't afford very many).  You only listen to them when you want a real special experience.  Not for daily consumption.  Bottom line, if you can find one with music you love and you've got a good machine, it will be your prize possession.  In fact it may bring more pleasure than most $600 audio purchases...?

It's about $200 more than I'd like to pay, so it would be the scarcity combined with finding music I loved that would push me over the edge.

Nice find!!!

I like the simplicity of the site, the information on it, and the sound samples.  Very well done.

The site musicstore.revox.com is a site that Revox has selling tapes made by Horch House in Switzerland. You can by tapes directly from Horch House at the same price as you would through musicstore.revox. They also make LPs and digital copies of the recordings. They take the studio master tape and make a copy of it after making sure it is up to their standards. The vinyl pressings are made from this tape, as well as R2R tapes. The digital copies are also made from this copy.
Each digital format is made from the copy and not reformatted from another digital format. You should be able to get a true comparison of the three formats, 24/96khz to 24/192khz to DSD. Even comparing vinyl to tape to digital. Should make for an interesting and entertaining time of music listening.
By the way, Horch House has terrific customer service. They had revised the website catalog, removing two recordings from R2R tape copies. After a quick email to them inquiring about the possibility of still getting a copy of them and then a prompt reply from the founder of Horch House....well... the tapes are on their way :) :) :) :)

Has anyone tried the offerings from ABC international? I'm curious about the source tape and the duplication method.

Cheers,

Ian
