My most recent show was Depeche Mode last September, they were touring for their album Delta Machine.  The show was excellent.

Prior to that there was Beatles vs Stones Tribute Show at a bar caled Anthem in Down Town San Diego (they call it the Gas Lamp) ... lots of fun, kraft beer and great tunes of course.

My last 'live show' was me doing some solo work at the River Street Jazz Club in Wilkes-Barre, PA... I did OK, but it being a jazz club, lots of people were talking...

Did one of my new pieces: Blues Adagio for Piano...  I should rip off a quick recording and link it on here...

I've also been working on a tribute to George Duke, who recently passed away... (m.)

If you ever make it down here again let me know, maybe we can hook up - I have a friend who can sometimes score tickets to the shows at The House of Blues in the Gas Lamp.  It's a great venue, very intimate and the area is pretty fun in general ... right now their are a bunch of secret room speakeasies (like the prohibition days) popping up (they are usually bars inside of bars with secret passages, etc.) and of course San Diego is the micro-brewary capitol of the world, so there's always good beer flowing. ;)

My favorite show I caught there (and one of my all time favorite shows in general) was defintely B.B. King.  He's awesome of course on the guitar, but he has to have one of the most powerful voices I've ever heard ... I swear he didn't even need a microphone!

When he came out, they put a chair on front of the stage and he took a seat and he says ... "I know what you're thinking ... B.B. King done got old, but I can still rock with the best of them" and then he proceeded to rock the house down like he was on fire! 8-)

Beowulf, I like good beer....and I might take you up on that....when I head out there.  March probably.... . BB King...I have seen....hope to see him again soon....great musician with a full horn section I love.

Mark, do post a Link for playing...cool.

....going on my 3rd night of shows: I did go to Capital Cities & Fitz & the Tantrums Thursday night....great show.  ...went to Elton last night...and he was great and in good voice and sharp on the Yamaha full piano!  Nigel Olson & Davey Johnstone of 41 years in the Elton John Band....played with him....very very good show.

Tonight completes the Tri-fecta with John Mayer with Philip Philips warming up.  Single digit temps though....freezin' man!  But I have the Skyway from my Hotel (got a deal at the Double Tree for tonight).

Peace...go hear some live music tonight!   Stone of Tone

I have an Palladia recording on my DVR with him and Keith Urban...I have not watched/listened to in awhile....very good!.....off today to watch it now...... .

No concerts for me until Sting & Paul Simon on my Birthday in February.....unless I get to Squeeze in Joey DeFrancesco on the Hammond B3....next month!   Cheers, Stone of Tone

Last night I watched 3 Doors Down at the House of Blues in San Diego's Gas Lamp District.  I can't say that I was ever a big fan of them (I probably knew a total of three songs out of last night's set ~ Kryptonite, Loser and Here Without You) and I probably would have never gone, but my friend's wife loves these guys and she bought us all tickets (who am I to refuse a free show ;D).

I will say that the show was excellent, the music and songs were good and they are great musicians.  Their fans love them as well and it was an all acoustic show in a small venue so it was pretty intimate.  Overall, I would be happy to see them again if the opportunity arises.

Cool Beowulf, I would not pass that up...and then it turned out to be a good performance and fun...you had.

I am partying right now (with a DD = Designated Driver)...going to the aforementioned St. Paul Winter Carnival BEER DABBLER 3:30 till 7:30 pm outside in Single-Digit Weather!

The Band of interest is Silent Disco....where you wear head phones for the Band...not a big fan of head phones...but, I'm really there for the CRAFT Beer!

Cheers, all have a great weekend....and back to my ZMA tomorrow & the Grammy's (the girlfriend too).   -Stone

Damn, this was so cold....below 0 (the Beer Dabbler above post).

Anyway, I am heading indoors.  Sting & Paul Simon at the Xcel Energy Center Sunday night for my Birthday!  Call the Car Service!  Lars is Parrrtaaaing!

My buddy Mark Goodman on Serius Sat....said I would not be disappointed!  Sting does a full set....and so does Paul, AFTER they do a 10 song set together....quite the night I think/hope.

Cheers, Stone Listening to Chris Botti's Trumpet.....Martin Committee Trumpet made in 1939.........ZMA mind blowing!

More like the next Ted Lewis! (Hardly anyone knows about Ted Lewis these days but in the 'twenties and 'thirties he led a band and played a little clarinet. His tag line was "Is everybody Happy?" Jazzman Eddie Condon who knew how to turn a phrase and tell a joke said of Ted Lewis: He could make the clarinet talk! But mostly it said "please put me back in the case.")

Yes, I'm quoting myself ;D

Last weekend I saw 3 Doors Down ... AGAIN.  You would think that seeing them twice within a 5 month period I must a big fan or something, however they just happened to be playing along with the Gin Blossoms and Nelson (Ricky's kids) at a Wine and Craft Beer Fest in Temecula (North San Diego County).  Last time it was an acoustic session, this time 3 Doors Down slammed us with full blown electricity and there were stellar performances from each band.

Temecula (being famous for wine) also has some class "A" breweries... it was 90 degrees in the shade and I had a designated driver so the ice cold beer was a flowing!!! 8-)

Wow Stone, what a summer line-up indeed!

A few years back ... ok maybe a decade or so back ;D.  We went to Antigua and really enjoyed the music scene there (lots of cool Reggae).  But there was one night that really stood out to me ... we were at a formal (Black Tie) dinner party, except that it was on the beach and nobody wore shoes.  So there we were ~ Tux's on, toes in the sand, the Red Stripes were flowing and there was a guy who came in (just him and his acoustic guitar) and played a whole set dedicated to Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra and other Jazz type singers in which he turned them all into Reggae style.  It was just a stunning performance and caught us all off gaurd!

Impromptu is sometimes the best, ....cool Beowulf. I liked Antiqua....Eric Clapton's house/I waved as we drove by........he does a lot for the school kids there and his rehab center too....and the music.

Hey, I saw Cantus, finally, this past Sunday at Assumption Catholic Church in St. Paul. They did not disappoint! I don't know how I forgot to mention this...it was quite memorable. I was just reflecting on it...and remembered I did not mention here.

Dave, Scottish Electric Band. I will check it out. This is the great thing about this hobby...I love so many different genre's...it would take two lifetimes to get to it all! I keep discovering an discovering...it never gets old for me. I don't know what I would do without my Music in this crazy world... .

After Sir Paul at Target Field 8/2....(the sound was good too)...I did go to Dave Koz Summer Horns 8/17...sound was good....good deep bass too. Then, Toby Keith 8/21...sound so so...he was a little hammered too.
Also, Boston on Friday, 8/29....sound sucked!  I had Huey Lewis an the News at this same Venue back in May...an his sound guy(s)...had it nailed beautifully! So, no excuse sucky Boston sound guy(s).

Tonight, last minute, an lucky to get a couple decent seats for the 9 pm show.  Mr. Lee Ritenour baby!  Can't wait!  Cheers!

Rob...Deafheaven were at Midpoint music festival last year, but unfortunately I missed them.  I'm not sure this makes any sense, but I prefer to listen to Sunbather on headphones vs. my speakers.  Maybe it's because my wife can't stand the screaming...but I don't think my system does the album justice.  It's one of those few times where I wish I had 1000 watts of SS juice to just blow me out of the room.  Have fun!

Hi Dave,

Yes I agree with you, it is very challenging material for room-based audio systems.  I was able to get my system to a place though where I prefer listening to it on the big rig.  The ah-ha moment for me was when I placed my GIK 244 panels w/ scatter plates at the first reflection point, and suddenly this homogeneous wall-of-sound, cacophonous recording started to separate... I could hear the layers and (more) distinct separation of vocals, drums, guitar... amazing.  I feel like listening to this album now: first at work on headphones, then tonight again on the system!

This is shaping up to be a great week for live music:

My buddy and I went to The War on Drugs show on Weds.  It took the engineer a couple of songs to dial in the sound, but once he got it dialed in, it was very enjoyable.  Great set.  I really appreciate their latest album...

Tonight is Rhiannon Giddens.  I think the theater may be a tad too big for her, but it is a very nice theater.  I hope it's not too empty (for her sake).  I am expecting the show to be fantastic.  IMHO, her solo album is excellent. In fact, I am listening to it on TIDAL as I type this.

Tomorrow night is Spoon at the same venue we saw WoD.

Have a great weekend everyone!

I don't have any whistling truck drivers around but this Sunday I'll be going to a production of the Musical, "Crazy For You" that's packed with Gershwin tunes....and I think the new Musical, "Motown" comes the following week.  Mark.

PS...saw the touring company of the Musical "Annie" a couple weeks ago.

Dave, Rick & Kenny were awesome! Hot summer night fun outdoors at the Zoo!

Then, when walking out from the show (how is this for spontaneity), "I said lets go see Ant Man in IMAX 3D"?! We walked in on perfect timing...last Trailer was playing and it was a fun great Movie....nice addition Marvel!

We did the double bill!

Well, time for Sunscreen, and heading downtown MPLS for Kenny Chesney.....glad I'm off tomorrow....Sue too!

Saw Spandau Ballet last night at Humphrey's By The Bay.  Which is an outdoor venue on Shelter Island in San Diego.  It was very intimate, the max seating is around 1400.

Looks a bit like this:

I'm not a really big fan of the new romance type of stuff like ABC, Culture Club, Wham, etc. and didn't even think I would like it, but my girl loves 80's type stuff like that and really wanted to see them.  Well, I was wrong ... I thoroughly enjoyed the show, they had excellent musicianship, played really tight and the singer had perfect key the whole night through.  They were having fun being up there and you could tell.  The saxophonist in particular is pretty amazing and has to be one of the busiest person's I've ever seen live, he plays bongos, guitar, sax and clarinet sometimes within the same song ;D

I also realized that I knew much more of their set list than I thought ... I thought I only really new their song True, but they had a lot of good songs.  Anyways, if they come your way I recommend seeing them live.

Nice Beowulf. I'm checking their schedule to see if they are coming my way. Yes, their musicianship ~ always top notch. They know how to record too! SAX is my thing. I would have really enjoyed this show with my SuzyQ.

Speaking of Sax. I am seeing Boney James tonight at the Dakota. Hot in the City tonight with Sue! I will start at my favorite Irish Pub first ~ The Local on Nicolette Mall. Boney can lay it down! I got Table (TB) 141, seats 1 & 2!  Work can wait till Tuesday....it's summer time!!!!!

Would love to check out the Dakota some time.  We have a place downtown in San Diego called 98 Bottles that has lots of improve jazz sessions and other great music which also happens to specialize in Craft Beers of the region.  It's a great place to hang on Sunday afternoons.

Will be seeing Duran Duran on 9/27 in the Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre, looking forwqard to that.

Here is the video of the entire concert of Sly & Robbie with Norwegian electro-Jazz trumpet maestro Nils Petter Molvaer, guitarist Eivind Aarset and machine operator (for lack of a better word) Vladislav Delay. Shot in Warsaw.

I put together the whole thing, did the artistic production, helped book the tour (21 gigs in 30 days throughout Europe) and I am quite proud of how this huge artistic gamble turned out.

We even got a great review in the Financial Times, of all publications!!!

Hi Trip. Will do/about the show. Nice day today here, so I'm down for dinner first then the 9pm show. I have today and tomorrow off, so today is my Saturday night. Ricky Peterson I hope is on key's tonight with Mr. Sanborn. Ricky is really personable, as is David. Nice thing about the Dakota the musicians will mill around at break and before the 2nd set after the 1st when you're coming in the club.....you get to say hello and grab a pic together and/or wait for the post show meet and greet.

Great show with an extended version of Maputo. 71 and gettin' it done, was Mr Sanborn last night. He even joked about a song off one of his 24 Albums. He could remember the name of the song, but not the Album Title....he says: "I can't remember shit anymore."

He came out at 9:35 and played till 11:15....no break. Encore was with Paul Peterson/Mpls., whom had played every instrument on one of his Albums of yester-year. Paul picked up the bass and an awesome funky dance session ensued with all of us.

Yes, do go see the elder statesmen, that is David Sanborn. Whom, lets face it.....created++ the Genre Instrumental that he Plays in Funk, Latin, Blues and Contemporary.

PS-Eric Leeds, performed too!  Great show!

The Heartbreaker is: Prince would have been there too, last night with Leeds being in the House. Prince frequented the Dakota all the time.

++Chuck Mangione & Herb Alpert.....on there respective horns included and my apologies to anyone else that is not coming to mind.

At least the Xcel Center has Acoustic Treatments.....other venues like Target Center have none. However, in a big venue....it is really up to the Sound Board guy too. Sarah McLachlan was the best sound I have ever had some years back at Xcel Center.....to die for.

I always go to shows with my Audiophile sound Hat left at home...and just enjoy it for what it is. However, I always look to be surprised....like I was with Sarah............ .

U2 show in chicago was a joke.  Bono and his political bs and not to mention the sound was one of the worst ive ever heard.  Over the top loud distortion!  I moved around thinking it was my seats....nope sounded like shit everywhere.  Very unenjoyably.  Dont waste ur money on this one.  They were much better 30 yrs ago.

Lumineers where fantastic however.  i've never heard bass drums this low... ever!

Yeah, I do look forward to the Robert Cray show beo, in the Zoo.

I hear you Trip. Outdoor shows can suck. I took my youngest daughter to see Jason Aldean and Kenny Chesney a couple years back at Target Field....sound sucked real bad. I am leary about going to see Billy Joel at Target Field the end of July.

Yeah, the War (great music and what was/is being told) CD recording sucks Archie...to bad on the Vinyl too.

Great show with decent indoor sound at Xcel Centre, for Walsh & Petty Saturday night. Glad we went. Petty said in an interview....this 40th anniversary tour....this is it/done. At 66 and the band 66+.....they were sharp and Petty is personable and loves his craft. I love the Guitar changes he and Campbell make.....and they are Musicians....the band included. Nice to share a band with the girlfriend/she loves too.

....it was a great Saturday night party!

Next up: besides Mr. Cray at my favorite small venue/Zoo......Roger Waters at Xcel....end of July.
......could be Mr. Water's last go round....I will be there.

Hey, and Joe Walsh at 69...played a killer 65 minute set of all his best solo and a tribute to Glen Frey....Take it to the Limit......great double bill show.  I have seen Joe before, many years ago solo...I forgot how funny he is.....and a musician as well....loves his craft.

What an amazing band (and yes I did see PF on the DSOTM/Wish you Were Here tour in the 70's) and if anyone likes PF and you get a chance to see Brit Floyd you will not be disappointed. Great sound, wonderful production and amazing musical talents. Check out Angela Cervantes doing The Great Gig in the Sky on you tube. Lot's of Floyd on the table this holiday weekend. Happy listening, Chris.

Cool HD.

Though David Gilmour and Roger Water's will never see eye to eye again. I will have to enjoy seeing them separately.

July 26th for me.

........Jeff Beck's drummer is on this tour. He is total best tits.'

Set List............. .

Roger Waters

***

1. “Breathe”
2. “One of These Days”
3. “Time”
4. “Breathe (Reprise)”
5. “The Great Gig in the Sky”
6. “Welcome to the Machine”
7. “When We Were Young”
8. “Déjà Vu”
9. “The Last Refugee”
10. “Picture That”
11. “Wish You Were Here”
12. “The Happiest Days of Our Lives”
13. “Another Brick in the Wall Part 2″
14. “Another Brick in the Wall Part 3″
15. “Dogs”
16. “Pigs (Three Different Ones)”
17. “Money”
18. “Us and Them”
19. “Smell the Roses”
20. “Brain Damage”
21. “Eclipse”
22. “Vera”
23. “Bring the Boys Back Home”
24. “Comfortably Numb”

.....and I'm thankful he is at Xcel ctr. and NOT Target Center. Xcel, has Acoustic treatments.....and some of the smart sound guys know how to bring out tuneful bass and at the other end NO Ringing in the highs/reflecting off the upper of the Arena. Tom Petty was such a show....and besides the cool Laser's Roger will have .....I bet the sound will be the same formula as Petty's sound team.

"Welcome my son. Welcome to the Machine."

john mayer with dead and co.  last friday.  still a wonderful show.  no talking, no bs, no politics (thats right bono!) and a bunch of people who dance worse than i do.

love shows where everyone is nice and no one sits down the entire show.  and there aren't a million cells phones recording the whole thing (whats up with that?) annoying the shit out of me... getting old i guess, but cant you just live in the moment?

if you haven't caught john mayer (or his trio) yet do.  he is an amazing guitar player and can do it old school.

still get a drum solo at a dead show!!

My daughter and I are going downtown to attend the Air One Hits Tour event, featuring Skillet.

Three other teeny bop style (Hip Hop, these days) acts will perform, but I made a promise several years ago, "If Skillet ever comes any where near here, We are going."

Now I like Skillet. They are a hard rock alternative Christian band with a decent message to all of our youth. They friggin' rock, too.

I will be going into the den of iniquity where the (local basketball team) Pacers play.  We have "seats,"  so my cane will be a bit less intimidating, mostly. I am a sixty two year old man, taking his Sixteen year old daughter to her SECOND concert.
I am wrought from  "Whole Cloth!"

About three years ago, we went to our first concert together. We saw Heart and Jason Bonham. First was all Heart, but the final hour was all Led Zeppelin, via Heart and Bonzo's kid. It was awesome.

Hoping this one is as good!

I have the closing/Rock n Roll Hall of Fame show from a few years ago.....of Prince and Petty with the remaining Wilbury's.....and George Harrison's son....playing "While my Guitar Gently Weeps" of George's....it is satisfying to watch.....George's son....in awe of Prince laying it out on his Guitar/the last couple minutes............. . nough said.

M. Ward & Rhiannon Giddens at the Disney Concert Hall this Wednesday night.  Will be the first time at this venue which is supposed to be acoustically amazing.  Hearing these artists there should amount to a pretty phenomenal evening!

Title: Re: Let us know your next Live (Music) Show

Rhiannon was divine!  She is talented - it's insane how much so.  And the Disney Concert Hall was beautiful visually and acoustically.  Rhiannon, between one her sets even commented on how amazing it was as a venue stating, "It's almost too perfect," which made me chuckle.

M. Ward was a bit disappointing.  They should have put him first.  It was anticlimactic, Rhiannon Giddens, then M. Ward.  She alone more than made the evening though.

I highly recommend catching a live performance of her if you can.

Attended the Jazz Kitchen down in Indianapolis late on Saturday.

WOW, just wow.

I went alone and no one was there to tell me we had to go.

Outdoors is best, Jeff...no doubt. We dodged some humid weather and no rain too. Was a perfect night! They played 8:30 to 10:05 or so..... . Best part, it was FREE. MN State Fair, picked up the tab for this one....part of their free concerts with Leinenkugel footing part of the bill also, I guess.

They were tight & right! Played: "What is Hip?" ....too. They have a great continuing Tour for this late summer. Lead singer was way full of soul. Sound was pretty good too..... .

...have a great weekend...firing up my ZMA right now for a few hours!

Fleetwood Mac, this coming Monday! We took Tuesday off.

Neil Finn & Mike Campbell on the Tour! No Whining Lindsey, you got fired for a reason.

This will be it folks. When Sammy Hagar interviewed Mick Fleetwood about a year ago on his show....he visited Mick's place he owns and gigs happily outside of London I recall....Mick hinted .....this will be it.

Sue wants to go so we are there. Plus, with Mike Campbell laying it out there. ....... and this being it.

Phil Collins last night in Oakland. Voice is still strong, but time has taken it toll on his back. Had his 17 year old son Nick playing drums, totally nailed it. Heavy weight band, Leland Sklar on bass, Daryl Strummer guitars, 4 pc horn section and on. I've seen Phil 17 times now with that other band, this was the only solo tour of his I have seen. Glad he still has the music in him. Happy weekend, and happy listening, Chris.

Tomorrow I'll fly over to San Diego and await a Sunday departure of the 31st Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise.  My parents turned me on to this cruise and I can honestly say it has brought me more live music joy than any other thing I can think of.  I've been on 5 of these cruises and there is something magical about having so many incredibly talented musicians on a boat.  They intermingle, they jam, they eat breakfast next to you, they become a tiny strange one week long family with you.  And they bring you the Blues.....  Somehow the staff sets up anywhere between 5 and 6 stages and the sound is ALWAYS top shelf.  It puts so many live sound systems to shame, I don't know how they are so dialed in.  If you like the blues just google LRBC 31 for the lineup.  If you'd like an incredible experience, try to get on one of the future cruises.  I never believed my parents.... until I went on one  ;)

Having that many Blues People on board couldn't leave much room for passengers!?!?!?!?

Occupancy for the boat is just upwards of 2000 passengers.  It usually works out to around a 10:1 ratio of passengers to band members.

Oh, I think I mis-understood your post...  all of the passengers are there only to hear blues for a week straight. It’s a big crazy party.

No, Dan, I meant that I was surprised by the number of "blues entertainers" and in addition the quality of them! You will, I am sure, have a most enjoyable cruise!!

My girl and I took her mother to see Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons at Viejas Casino in San Diego area last weekend.  Frankie is 84 years old at this point and his voice sounded excellent, if you closed your eyes you would think you were transported back to the 70's ~ he was that good!  Sharp as a tack and pretty witty making fun of the shameful alt-leftist congress that we have at this point ... let's just say Nancy P's ear were burning (just a touch it didn't distract from the musical enjoyment of the evening).

His band was super tight!  They had a guest horn section from Earth Wind and Fire and Chicago.  Aside from the stellar wind section, his guitarist was pretty badass and of course kudos to the rest of the band keyboards, percussion ... they were all excellent!

As were the Four Seasons ~ obviously at this point none of the original Four Seasons were there, but 4 young guys who had a lot of energy and you could tell the loved being there and part of Frankie's band.

All and all a great night, almost every song he sang was a well known classic, but a few welcomed rare and b sides were awesome too ... my favorite and their opening and closing "Who Loves You"

The end of July and August is going to fun in Seattle! It starts with Dave Alvin and the we have James McMurtry, John Prine, The Blasters, Jesse Dayton, Jr. Brown, Southern Culture on the Skids, Lucero and maybe The Steeldrivers. Guess I’ve been getting into the country/folk/rock,Americana thing. Most of these artists are playing at the infamous Tractor Tavern in Ballard. I’m psyched!

I’m a big fan of his too. I listen to his Spotify radio channel and make other channels based off of him. This will be his second show in Seattle this year!
