Title: SV83S monos on ebay
Post by volkl18203 on 08/19/13 at 22:13:23

Hello,
I am back from the wilderness ;D About 5 years ago I sold 2 Zen triodes (run mono) for a pair of Wavelength Gemini monos. I have never quite got over it. The Wavelengths are fine amps but they are not my beloved Zens. Today I recieved the SV83S monos I purchased on ebay. These are beautiful but I have some concerns. I am not sure they are original monoblocks. They look like but have 2 sets of speaker posts on each one. Were they made this way from Decware? After viewing pics on the site I dont see these models with that many binding posts. It has no owners manual and I am not sure how to hook the up to the speakers (one red/black on each side or on the same side). Another dumb question - can you power up a tube amp without speakers attached? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,Greg

Thanks, yes I need to get some pics up. Just have to figure out how. The tag on the bottom says they were built in June of 2010 by L. Di-Aping,serial #'s 099 and 100. I have looked for the owners manual here with no luck. They look the part, switch in front,3 output tubes, very well built. The 4 speaker posts on each one seem wrong and I am not sure which 2 posts to hook up to. Could be an old wives tale but I have heard to never power up a tube amp that is not connected to a load.

It would be hard to blow up a transformer with only 4 watts, which I believe that those monos are. You could connect them without speakers briefly.

You had best contact DECWARE about these. It is basically a discontinued product - the one with the mirrored top plate and three output tubes. They would know all about its use.

On the EL34 Monoblocks I had from Steve both sets of binder posts were useable, and only one had to be "connected." I'd be surprised if this were not the same way. . . .

I asked that because I read it in the owners manual for the Zen 2 channel here. I dont remember doing that for my previous Zeen 2 cahannel amps.
Thanks,
Greg

Wow! Those look great!

And the quality of the wiring looks like Decware work.

Anyone know what those little blue pill shaped resistors are? I'm not familiar with that brand.

Well they are operational....not sure what I think :-/. I have them running in the single output tube mode. Everything is very bright and harsh, what is the typical breakin sound like? These are supposed to be brand new never used.
Thanks,
Greg

I only have a regular Zen amp (model A!) and it only took a few hours of playback to really settle in, and only got better with age.

I just got my old Zen back from Steve after some upgrades/tune-up, and I panicked at first because the first hour sounded a bit harsh, but then warmed up really quickly.

I'd let it play for hours on end and I bet it doesn't take long.

If you don't like them, seriously consider selling them to me! I was just thinking about upgrading a little or adding a couple more Zen amps and using them for my home theater!

LOL, your first on the list.
Well they have been operational for 1.5 hrs. and it is getting better. less harsh and bright, almost warming. I have lived with the Wavelentgh's for 5 years and this is a good comparison. The Wavelength's came on very bass heavy and muddy for 5 minutes then BAM everything cleared and focused. Definately different from my Wavelength's. I figure a week 24/7 before I get a feel for it all. ;D
Thanks for sharing your expierience.

What speakers are you using?

My signal path is as follows
Mark Levinson #39 CDP.
Rane MX22 outboard Xover splitting highs and lows.
Lows feed to a BagEnd ELF-2 splitting the signal again.
60Z on to 500 hz feeds a Crown K1 to Klipsch La Scala bass bins
Below 60hz feeds a Crown K2 to BagEnd 18" sealed cabs.
Everything above 500 hz from the Rane feed the SV83S monos onto Altec 511B horns/BMS4554 compression drivers.
Its SWEET ;D

Well I spoke with Steve and all is good, thanks for the input. I will have to post my impressions as they get burned in.
Thanks Steve
