Title: Speaker recommendations Post by Hipfan on 03/01/13 at 17:50:42 I'm looking for speaker recommendations...again. I'm currently driving a pair of Klipsch Forte II's, but want try something that is not a horn speaker. I listen to mostly rock and would be driving the speakers with a Torii MK3. So a non-horn efficient rock speaker, if that's possible. Thanks! |

I'll bet your Torii would make a pair of JBL LSR2336 scream, though. @~92db/w, and a good speaker for any music, from Metallica to Mahler. I've wanted a pair, but they don't come in oiled oak! Decware's best "rock" speakers are probably the MG944. |

Regarding rock. It's the genre I listen to most. I don't typically listen at high volume or rock out. I just need something that sounds good with rock...tight bass, etc and can be listened to at higher volume, on occasion. |

I usually play it this loud for a short time every day just to wash the problems of the day away. The combo of a Torii III and MG944's has been a very satisfying match for me. The cool thing about my stereo is how good it sounds at lower levels also. My body is hardwired to get up around 4:00 AM and it is nice to be able to play music without disturbing my 2nd shift working wife. Kind of the best of both worlds. Now I will also say that one of these days I intend to buy myself a pair of HR-1's in Koa. But they are at quite a different price point. MG944's are a kick ass speaker. |

You will love the Zu's. They can rock but also can handle any style of music with ease. My Torri sound great with them and you have have tons of headroom at 100db. |

I actually spoke with someone from Zu Canada a few months ago, when they were selling the Omen Standards for $1,500. The thing I didn't like was there was no way to audition them, so I lost interest and moved on...now here I am again still researching/searching :( |

I like Omega/Hoyt-Bedford speakers with 2 (or more) subs for rock, but again like most higher sensitive speakers that I know of hard to hear before purchase. I haven't heard any Tekton's, but I would like to someday. Lin |

I am really looking forward to a review on those as well. Tektons are not as sexy as Zu's offerings, but I think the price point for Tektons (in general) are better. |

I've tried (just because they were around, how can I resist?) a pair of heavy '60s Knight Audio speakers, My RL-2 Decware speakers, and a pair of B&O speakrs. The Torii has the cojones to bring out the best in all of them. I waffle between deciding the HR-1 and the ERR are the best with the Torii. Overall the HR-1s give the best traditional stereo presentation, with stronger bass, more clearly delinieated imaging and a taller soundstage. The ERR however have to my ears a more tangible imaging and a more immersive staging and to my ears gives a slightly less "processed" vibe to recordings, more "real" in that it's just an inch closer to the way I hear music performed by humans and not reproduced via a stereo system. I would second Greg's suggestion to save up for the ERR. |

Sure, I listen to Queen and Zep, but artists like Neil Young would be more along to the lines of the rock I listen to most frequently. I also want to get into some Jazz and Blues. There is so much great music out there and I need to broaden my listening habits. I REALLY like what I've read about Tekton and the Lore specifically and plan to give Eric a call on Monday, to learn more. |

I spoke with Sean (great guy) and he is going to build me a custom Omen "Dirty Weekend" set of speakers. They will be an Omen Def cabinet/configuration with high output Soul Superfly drivers, plus tweeters featuring the Mundorf Silver Oil caps with high-pass values to match with the Omen Def with HO drivers. |

I just installed my NanoTech upgraded drivers in my Superfly's and it has left me speechless. They already sounded sooooooo good, but now they have entered into a new realm of performance I have not heard or at least liked as much (personal preference) in a sub $10.000 speaker. Everything is better, tranparancy, speed, much tigher bass resolution and incredible smoothness. They are the most "intimate speakers" I have ever heard and yet can rock the house down, you will understand what I mean when you get them. They like lots of toe-in, and Zu's placement guide for performance and tone is very interesting and sound counsel. The new drivers truly handle every type of music. The old drivers did struggle a little with very complex musical passages, but not now. Effortless fluidity is now the Norma for everything. Interestly, with the new drivers I now have turned up the treble pots a bit more, the treble smooth as silk. It's weird because the tweeter and silver/oil Mundorfs have not changed. Just shows how much high frequency's you get from the single drivers. I have my Torii with the 8 and 16 ohm taps, as I bought it for my Zu's, but the 8 ohm tap sounds just as good so you will be thrilled. With the 101db efficency, you will notice any defect in a tube. I have has to replace a couple that were too noisy. My current tubes are all behaving now and very silent. The cyro JJ's 6ac7's and cyro 6N1P-EV from cyroset sound better than ever with the new nanotech drivers. Zu really has something special with these babies and are so generous in offering a cost effective upgrade. First class. I love how you call and talk to Sean, like he has all the time in the world. One I hope to hear some Decware speakers, but Zu and Decware also are a perfect match. If you can afford the new ND drivers, I reccomend it. Even if you need to go with one driver per speaker. |
