Title: Bad SV83
Post by polarbear9988 on 04/29/12 at 13:19:05

I know the issue of bad SV83 has come up before but information has only been related to small logo. My concer is that there is likely be bad sv83 without the small logo.  As such, merely knowing of the small logo may not be enough for the purpose of distinguishing the bad ones from the goods. Does anyone know whether there are physical differences, apart from the logos, between the good and bad sv83?

I believe the "bad" SV83 has more to do with a bad batch; therefore, the construction would not be different from the "good" SV83.

Rivieraranch, thanks for your reply.

I have another post in the old equipment forum and it is not getting any reply so I thought I may seek your and others views on the using 5R4GY here.

I know it has been said that 5R4GY is suitable for SE84C (not C+) and indeed I recently put one in my SE84C and it sounds great.  However, non of the Decware official documents mention a 5R4GY can be used in SE84C.  I also notice that it has been said that the first input capacitor for the 5R4GY should not exceed 4uF.  Whereas, it seems like the SE84C is having a 40uF input capacitor at the filter and it has been said that anything higher than 4uF will shorten the life of the 5R4GY.

I understand that there may be variant of 5R4GY which may accept input cap at the value of 20uF.  However, I would like to confirm 5R4GY will not damage the SE84C and the higher value input capacitor will not shorten the life of 5R4GY even with long term use.  Thanks.

Shreekant,

Thanks for your reply! What kind of 5R4s have you been using.  I have a 5R4GY, just want to make sure that is alright.  Thanks.
