Title: SE84CW
Post by hoops on 04/26/12 at 18:55:43

Hi all, my first post here.
I have just bought a little SE84CW dating from 2003.
There is not much info on this particular model, what sets it apart from the standard 'C' model?
It came with a pair of EL84 tubes, and a single SV-83, which I would like to find a replacement pair to compare.
Can I fit the standard regulator tubes listed on the current models web-site like the 274B without modification?

Thanks, Rob  :)

Welcome! I'm not sure about the 274B. . . that may be a bit too much for that circuit, but then again, perhaps not.

I'm not sure what the "W" stood for. . . "World voltage" perhaps? I have a "Rev. A" amp and had a "CS" (Select) and I know you are in for some great listening. I preferred the sound of SV83s to EL84. . . they were clearer, sunnier, though less "warm". . . I recommend getting a pair of SV83s so you can compare and contrast.

Thanks, I guessed it may be a 230v version reference.

The only thing is SV83 tubes are not that common over here in the UK  :(

Not that common in the USA either in comparison to the classic audio tube tyes. A quick look on UK ebay showed that there are options though:

Thanks, I also found I had Mullard E88CC input tube, which I stuck in place of the Golden Dragon ECC88, I actually prefer the ECC88, seems a bit more direct and open, where the Mullard is a little too smooth. I think for higher volumes the Mullard would be a good choice.

Those SV83's are the ones I tried out at first, but they're not that good.
[cheap though]. I bought a batch of Svetlana's here on the forum; the ones with the big logo, and they sound a lot better.
I also prefer the sound of the SV83 over the EL84's ; more speed and neutral sounding in my install.
Great amp you've got, now find the perfect match of tubes that suit your install and you'll stop looking for something else... ;)

I have found some 6P15P-EV from a local supplier (imported from Russia) which will be good to try.
