Title: Can I use 5uc3 rectifiers in my torii?
Post by Gopher on 07/17/11 at 14:19:27

A local friend had some 5UC3 rectifiers he wants to hear in my torii, but I'm unfamiliar with these tubes and want to double-check they are safe to use.

Does anyone know if these can be rolled in?

That sounds like it could be a Winged C 5U4G/5U3C or alternative. Should be fine, as it is a direct swap for a 5U4G. I had an NOS black plate one in my Taboo for a while, and it was very nice, but I replaced it with a Mullard G37, which I liked better. I believe it is also the same as or similar to a 5C3S, such as the Svetlanas.

I doubt it would sound better than U.S. N.O.S.

RR, you may be right—I have tried WInged C, RCA, two different Mullards, and a Raytheon, all NOS, in my Taboo, and I came out preferring the Mullard G37, and I think it was because of the synergies with the other tubes I had—but the only way he will know is to try them out, and they're certainly safe to use in that role. Can't remember if Gopher indicated he had US NOS or not already, and that's not what the Torii ships with either.

I am rolling with RCA 5u4g rectifiers right now and the experimentation with my buddy's tubes is free...  I don't see a down side.

I don't see a downside either. You never know!
