Title: New CD rack
Post by Randy in Caintuck on 03/17/11 at 20:07:45

I recently posted some information on the Hawthorne Audio site about a very functional and not-too-pricey CD rack that I built and thought I would share it with my friends at the Decware forum as well.

It works well for me because the CDs are at eye level and horizontal ..... so that I don't get a crick in my neck from turning my head sideways to read the label .....

The rack is built around these units :

It's the Bryco CDP-60 module and is sold by several online vendors.

I make no claims to be a finished carpenter, but it's not too bad for a "hillbilly wood butcher" .....

A larger photo can be found here.

Enjoy,

Randy

Howdy Bob,

I was afraid that someone would notice that .....

I made this comment about that fact on the Hawthorne forum :

"I still have to move some CDs to it from the old racks, but there is a disturbingly large number of empty slots that will eventually have to be filled. Oh well, it's better to have an empty wallet and a full CD rack ....."

To keep the appearance from being too ghastly in the short term, I have resorted to "double spacing" many of the disks.

What really blows my mind is that Lon's CD collection would fill this rack up many times over ..... I have a long way to go in my journey of music collection.

But, I am certainly enjoying the journey .....

Best wishes,

Randy

It looks nice Randy, good work.

Gives me new ideas for my new wing, under construction:

Just waiting on a refill.

Randy:

Nice work. And the Bryco is indeed reasonably priced.  I would need about 50 of them, but that's a different story.

More importantly, do you know if any of the slightly larger DVD-Audio or Dual Disc cases will fit? I'm not talking about the big ones, but the slightly oversized ones.

Hi Greg,

I haven't tried any of the slightly oversized cases in this insert, but Bryco does make a variety of the plastic inserts.

One is the Bryco DVD-20.

I will try a DVD case in the rack when I get home later tonight and let you know what the verdict is.

Best wishes,

Randy

Years ago I picked up a 36 inch wide, 30 inch tall, 18 inch deep three (8 inch deep) drawer Techline cabinet (assembly required).  Don't recall the exact price, but paid extra for full extension hardware.

It holds 750 standard sized CDs (no dividers so the jewel boxes might wear on each other, but can accommodate any width).  My 2nd audio system receiver/CDP rests on top which makes for a clean, compact design.  And the cost per CD is about the same with a rack included.

Greg,

I must have suffered a "senior moment" concerning your question about DVD-A cases ..... I don't have any .....

Sorry about that .....

What I do have is some double CDs such as this :

and some single CDs in jewel cases that are thicker than normal (wrapped in a cardboard outer sleeve) like this :

The double CDs do not fit in the slots and the thicker CDs have to be force fitted.

It looks like I will have to drag out the ol' Dremel tool and make a "slight modification" on a few of the slots to accommodate these CDs.

Fortunately, there are only a handful in my collection .....

Take care,

Randy

The CD rack has been a work in progress .....

I finally got around to putting a simple trim board on it and it turned out pretty well.  It's a fact that I will never make a living doing finished carpentry, but it serves the purpose .....

A larger photo can be seen here.

Randy

Looks good Randy!

Let's see. .. I'd need about twenty-five of them? :)

Don't disparage your wood-working skills. They haven't fallen apart, right?  Mission accomplished!

Nice job Randy!

Your CD rack doesn't take up a lot of floor space and your
CD's are at eye level.  Plus it looks nice.

Home run in my book!   :D
