Title: Smallish enclosure?
Post by Damien on 03/15/11 at 23:51:11

I have a pair of boxen that I built years ago. I have already ordered a pair of DFR65's to replace the old Realistic drivers. (Yes Realistic... when you're a teenager you go with cheap expecting to spill beer on it) Anyway now I am wondering if the boxes are too small for this driver and/or should I vent the box?

The boxes are 8x12x5 (interior dimensions). I have some foam in there now which can be removed. Also there is a tweeter. No crossover but the tweeter has a diode (or resistor or whatever) on it.

Damien-
I would recommend WinISD or similar program for this. You can input the specs from the driver and then tell it what box size you have. It will figure based on the specs if the driver is better suited for a vented or sealed box and show you the response curve for both types.
Hope that helps
Mike

You are buying a new Corvette engine and putting it in an old Escort that you happen to have lying around.  Will it make the Escort run better - Yes.  Will it make the Escort run like a Corvette - No.

Do not use the tweeter, or the attached capacitors.  They will not be needed.  You can leave the tweeter and foam in place to see what the sealed box sounds like, then remove the tweeters to get a taste for what a ported box sounds like.  Personally, I prefer the sound of a ported box.

If all else fails, just add a few sheets of MDF, a few hours of labor, and you can have a brand new set of corner horns...that's where the 6.5 modified Fostex is happiest.

You can't just hope to get a taste of a ported box, just by putting a hole in it. It has to be calculated for length and surface area.

You can also use WinISD for this.

Have fun!

I am currently building a pair of ZOB's but they won't be done before Late April most likely. Maybe early May depending on the build time on the FRX's I am going to get.  My Taboo amp will be here shortly and I have no decent speakers to connect to it. So I am getting the DFR65's to put in my old boxes that I am kind of attached to.

Somewhere on this website Steve says if you have boxes you're fond of get some DFR's for them. So I am. Once the ZOB's are done I may build a more proper enclosure for the DFR65's but one thing at a time. The only problem with the corner horns though is that I don't have a room in my house with a matched set of corners to put them in... too many doorways.

While I do have Windows on my Mac I hardly ever run it. Also it's win7 pro. I hope that app works in 7

Well my ZOB/DFR8's are now working and I think after hearing them that I really disrespected the DFR65 by putting them in the enclosure I did. I am hoping to build a pair of Voight Pipes to move the 6.5's into now that the ZOB's have taken over as my primary speakers
