Title: Time to rebuild the SE84B..what should I do?
Post by djn on 08/06/10 at 01:57:36

Hi All, I have the SE84B and it has seen better days.  It is still my favorite amp, but the rec tube is arcing, the driver tube is fading, the speaker termanals are loose, it has the hard wired AC cord, all the switchings and controls need cleaning.....on and on.

So, I figure it's time to go though the whole amp and give it a refreash.  What are the mods and updates I should be going for besides the obvious?  Cheers.

Do the CCE mod and run a fresh pair of 6P15P-EB output tubes.  Get a NOS rectifier, 5Y3GT or 5AR4.  Use a new input tube, 6N1P or 6922.

Thanks Steve.  I'll start reading up on that.  I am just about finished with my GM70 SET, but truth be told, I listen to your 84 more as it is my computer amp.

I can't seem to find anything on the CCE mod. Can you direct me?

Is the 9603 driver tube the same as the 6N1P?

I thought about changing the color of the chassis for the stock green, but is sort of like an ugly stepchild you can't help but love. ;D

There is a rectifier tube called 5Ц4C made by NOVOSIBIRSK (Russian) in 1957 and cheap as chips.. It's replaced the Mullard GZ32's in my Selects !!! Given it's low-flying profile and even lower price (about 4 euros or 5$)it should be first contender on anyones list of rectifiers to try.

Thanks Rap, I will look into that.

Can anyone explain the CCE mod?  I can't find anything about it.

Thanks Brian, just ordered caps from my friend's basement.  Will install them this weekend along with other stuff.  Cheers.
