Title: Viability of 6BQ7/6BZ7 tube in CSP2
Post by Rivieraranch on 08/04/10 at 03:14:24

There have been some comments elsewhere about substituting the 6BQ7 tube in place of a 6922. I do not note that anybody has tried that with a CSP2 or the other DECWARE equipment that uses the 6N1P/6922 tube.

One time I tried a 6CG7 and the amp was lifeless. Recently, somebody started a thread about using this tube and I shot it down, so to speak. The 6CG7 has lower transconductance, lower gain and it shows in the presentation.

However, I note that the 6BQ7 is similar electrically to the 6N1P - so much so that I use the the test parameters for 6BQ7 to test a 6N1P tube in my tester.

I would be curious whether anybody has tried this tube in a DECWARE.

My real question is whether using 6BQ7 or close equivalents would do any harm?

You should contact with Steve. Tube compatibility is a headache for me. Sometimes is not enough for a certain tube to be the equivalent in specs. Anyway I think it's not very risky in most cases and the mayor issue is to work with very similar electric values and perferming a bit different. Nevertheless each amp has their unique characteristics so I only take into account what the manual of the amp says or what the designer/engineer says.

Steve said that while mine was up there they used a pair of 6BQ7's as drivers and they did not have a problem with them. When I receive my CSP2+ back from DECWARE I will be looking into this tube.

Now that the CSP2+ has been returned to me I tried some 1950's Sylvania 6BZ7 (6BQ7 equivalent) in all three positions. It seems more like using a 6DJ8. The 6BZ7 is lighter, but with a slightly forward presentation with slightly less bass.

Now I have 2 6N1P-EV in the driver positions, with a CBS 6BZ7 in front. This combination sounds very good. It seems that there is more bass than when I used 3 Sylvania 6BZ7's. I have left the unit on for several days now and it is fine. I am running an old Sylvania 5U4G rectifier.
