Title: Boldly Go Where No 6CA4 Rectifier Has Gone Before
Post by Rivieraranch on 08/01/10 at 18:46:15

Due to my troubles with using some evidently turgid 6Y6G tubes that took down my 6X4 rectifiers, I am trying another rectifier.

With Steve's blessing, I have obtained a green light to substitute a 6CA4/EZ81 in place of the 6X4. I will need an adapter, which I have on order. I am curious to see what using this rectifier will sound like.

AS LUCK WOULD HAVE IT THE ADAPTERS ARRIVED BEFORE THE 6CA4'S.

Now we are in business with a pair of RCA 6Y6G's and RFT EZ81 (6CA4) rectifiers on top of adapters.

I don't think you could make this amplifier sound bad with any of the possible tube combinations. It sounds good with any of them, just different. What I am hearing with this particular combination is a wider soundstage, similar to when I popped some 6L6GC's in there.

With the 6CA4 rectifiers in place with the adapter they are a lot taller than a 6X4. This particular tube configuration reminds me of people posing for a group photograph, with the taller ones in the rear.

Sound-wise it is very open and the soundstage is wider. I was playing some familiar music last night and noticed that this was the case. The 6Y6's make the unit run very hot, which I have mixed feelings about. Maybe this should be my winter tube complement. Because you can feel the heat when you get close to it when the 6Y6's have been on for a while.
