Title: Any audio impressions from 6Y6 in Mini Torii?

This is a tube I know nothing of. But I see it is listed among the recommended types for this amplifier.

I don't know of anybody who has used other than the 6V6 or 6L6 in the amp. I am toying with the idea of securing some of the other tubes and trying them. But then you would have to play with the voltage regulator tubes with each one.

I have noted that with the 6V6 there is wonderful stereo separation and detail; with the 6L6 there is a larger, albeit slightly unfocused sound.

We need someone to undertake trying the Mini with the other 6_6 tubes that will work in it.

i have some 6K6 and 6L6 metal shell here in addition to all my 6V6.

I'm going to post to see if Steve can chime in on use of the E80CC in place of 12AU7; there seems to be people who have damaged amps with it, but it may work in many.

Yes, as I currently have a pair of RCA 6Y6ga tubes in my mini torii, they sound every bit as good as my other 6v6 tubes ( about 6 pair including the stock ones.  Probably even a bit more dynamic w more punch. You will notice that the amp runs somewhat hotter than w 6V6 tubes,  Steve said they will bias a little higher but no worries at all running them...

I also have a set of sylvanias 12AT7 tubes in place of the AU7's..  So I say grab a set off ebay,  about 20.00 or 25.00  a pair for nos, very affordable..

we just had a big cook out-fireworks night and about 20 folks gathered around the torii admiring its beauty visually and sound wise, with a few requests to set them up an out door sound system like mine.....  ;) Mark

I would like to have a nice system set up out in the open air on the back porch; especially this time each year when the weather first turns nice.

juanitox  has 350B in his.  Not the Western Electric original, but a replica from the Valve Art company. He writes high praise of it. https://www.decware.com/cgi-bin/yabb22/YaBB.pl?num=1261918683

The 6y6g sounds great. Better than 6l6 to me. My 6y6g has a very sweet sound that my 6v6 does not have. I am glad that you asked it has been
great to listen to them. Brian

The Mini Torii with the 6Y6's gets very hot, too uncomfortable to touch and hold your finger or hand on the transformers or even the chassis. But the sound is worth it. I got a pair of RCA 6Y6G's from Jim McShane. The 6Y6 has that "punch" that others have described. I am using it with a totally different rectifier, an EZ81 using a 9-pin to 7-pin adapter.

I am considering scaling back to a 6V4 or EZ80 rectifier to see how that works. I picked up 2 Mullard EZ80 rectifiers on a tube shopping expedition out of town.

I'm done with the 6Y6's right now. I've pulled them and have gone on to try some 6K6GT with the 6X4 rectifiers.

The conclusion with the 6Y6 is that it is a wide and deep soundstage tube; when paired with the 6CA4/EZ81 rectifier it has a lot of punch.

The 6Y6 should not be used with a 6X4WA or 6202 rectifier. These can only handle 50 Ma's. These 6Y6's can bias at 65 or 75 Ma's.

Hi Rivieraranch,
An interesting report.
Did you move on from the 6Y6 out of curiosity about other tubes, or did you decide you did not care for the punchy sound?  Or maybe it was the heat?

I am into 6K6 territory now. They are cheap as spit ($4.00 for NOS Westinghouse smoked glass or Channel Master gray plate Japanese) and they sound similar to the 6V6. The unit runs cool with them, too.

Soon I will pull out the 6Y6's again and see what rectifier sounds best. I have some 6V4/EZ80's that strike a mid-point between 6CA4/EZ81 and 6X4/EZ90.
