Title: rectifier bad?
Post by Jeff on 03/08/10 at 15:08:37

the rectifier tube in my taboo is glowing purple at initial turn on.
the color clears out after a minute or so.

i believe it's a mullard army tube.
been fine for about a year, just started doing this.
sounds normal at low volumes.

should i replace this tube.

There are a lot of threads about the purple color. It may have to do with extra electrons bombarding against the glass. I have some power tubes that do this. I don't know if it is the same with rectifiers. A good rectifier can last nearly the life of the equipment. Maybe you can get it tested to make sure that it is not going bad on you.

well turns out the tube was bad.

the gf left the house and i got a chance to play the stereo with some real volume...tons of distortion.

i put a philco 5y3 in that i had laying around and everything went back to sounding awzm.

Now you can chuck it then. The Philco is probably a Sylvania. You won't have any trouble with it.
