Title: Help choosing budgest subs for my first WO
Post by OldJunk on 02/28/09 at 22:04:29

Hi all. I am looking to build my first WO and am tring to do it on a budget. Looking for suggestions on what subs to use. I know budget subs will not give the best results but I will upgrade at a later point. I am thinking maybe car audio subs would be good bang for the buck? What suggestions do you guys have for me? I'd like to stay under 100 bucks for a pair of tens. Realistically I'd rather stay under 80 for the pair.
Let me know what you think and thanks

These are some descent woofers I have used but they are nothing to write home about:

I have used both of these woofers and have been pleasently surprise with there performance. I have only used the DVC in the WO36 enclosure( four of them, two clamshelled in each chamber). Not bad but I could easily over power them. I then step up to the HO Daytons. Major difference and prolly will never change back to inexpensive subs anymore.

If you have the money I would suggest these as a better investment:

I know the money is an issue but if you want to get just about perfect the first time the Daytons are the way to go IMHO.

Here is a link for some NHT( stopping production for now) stuff that is going fairly cheap:

thanks for the info
Let me ask a few more questions

Of the two Daytons which do you prefer? and how do they compare to Steve's drivers?

As for the NHT site which drivers would you choose for the WO or even any of the other projects from this site?

Lastly what would you think about these two car audio subs

Hope its not to many questions just want to make sure I go over everything I was looking at so I make the best choice given my budget. You see I'd like to build a few projects so I want to keep the prices of the drivers in check so I can pull all of them off. Got the bug ya know! But i want to make sure they are good enough so I won't be dissapointed with the results...

Thanks

My friend has a HWK12 with four Kicker Comps and its equal would be hard to find. Even my HWK15 has a hard time competing with it. I am a fan of the Kicker subs, so they might be a good choice. I have not owned any MTX stuff but have heard good things about their subs.

I have never used Steve's sub but if it works anything like his designs do it is bound to be excellent choice.

The Quatro looks to be a better choice but I also have not try them either. The Series II I have used with descent results but not my favorite. The HO has been the best performer for the WO design for me. Its loves power and works well in small enclosures but can break a budget.

As for the NHT:

NPT-11-075-1 OR NPT-11-083-1(shieled)

The 083 can be used near CRT tvs.

If you want to get a little more crazy use the AR 12"(NHT). You will need to add 2" to the height of the WO and angle the baffles. Just a thought. If you need more info let me know.
