Title: 6N2P's for the SE34I.2
Post by Steve Deckert on 07/08/08 at 03:10:00

Update!  The first batch of 6N2P's have been sold old.  And as you know many of them were a bit noisy with a background noise that would come and go.

Good news is that the second batch I have found from a new source and these are the 6N1P-EB with the plated pins, thicker glass, better build quality (top milspec of the 3 available grades).  I have not received them yet, but they should arrive any day now.  I expect these to be not only better sounding, but totally quiet (based on past experience) so it looks like we can have our cake and eat it too!

I am not raising the price on these better grade tubes because I set the original price to reflect the top grade (which at the time I thought I had - wasn't till late in the game I found several noisy ones).

And a special offer:  Anyone who has purchased 6N2P's from me in the past can get the new ones for 1/2 price!

Steve

If the 6N1P sets the amp to 2.0V input sensitivity, then what
does the 6N2P set it to?

The 6N2P's are in stock NOW.  They are available from the tube amp menu on the web site - bottom of the page.

Also,

The 6N1P sets the input sensitivity on the SE34I.2 to just under 2 volts making it difficult or impossible to clip the amp with a run of the mill CD player.  The 6N2P drops it to around 1.5 volts giving it a lot more gain and allowing you to find the power limit of the amplifier in most cases.

Steve,

6N2P (1.5V input sensitivity->6w/8ohms[6.93V]) yields 13.3dB total gain.
6N1P (1.9V input sensitivity->6w/8ohms[6.93V]) yields 11.2dB total gain.
(The 6N1P sets the input sensitivity on the SE34I.2 to just under 2 volts)

The difference between the two input tubes yields a 2.1dB difference!

Will changing between the 6N1P and 6N2P tubes really yield a noticeable difference?

I have a 1 month old SE34i.5 and the extra 2 db from the 6n2p-eb's makes a big difference when I am playing my turntable. My phono pre only has 39Db of gain, not enough to give me good volume on all vinyl.
The 6n2p's gave the SE34i the ooomph   it needed in volume . I am unsure at this time what I've given up for this 2 db increase. But yes 2db made a big difference, speakers are Klipsch Quartets.
