So, it looks like the only internal difference from the older "C" might be that it's set up for 5U4's instead of 5Y3's (100 ohm vs 150 ohm cathode resistor)?

That's basically it, yes.  The only other internal part that I believe has changed is the volume control.  I found a better one with a better tapper and superior feel.  Of course parts alone are only part of the resulting sound of an amplifier.  Layout has a lot to do with it, and the layout has improved somewhat.  In addition, the resonant frequency of the chassis dropped by around 2 octaves, thanks to a huge weight increase.  This amp will sound like a regular SE84C using dampers on the tubes, all by itself.  That's going to improve focus.
