Title: When DLS and DECWARE collide... 15" Wicked One
Post by KingKongInMyTrunk on 05/11/07 at 20:02:44

My WICKED ONE loaded with w 2 15" DLS SP15's that I built last year.  Got this box metered in a 1984 Plymouth Voyager at a local sound off.  I hit 147.3db ...... with 29hz lol and 148.9db at 48hz

that's a real nice box and a real nice score.
legal TL ?
box measurements ? throat opening size ?

The port size is 40"x18".  Those numbers that I hit was not off of TL but an AC.  I wish it were a TL then I would have been able to sleep easier knowing a more accurate score

what method / math did you use to scale it from the 12 inch version?

Simple math...
take the measurement of the 10" enclosure.... 36"(wide)
36"<--This is the measurement on the WO plans
10"<---The size of your woofer

Now to find the unknown side of the scaled up... or down version use...
x<---unknown measurement of scaled enclosure
15"<--- Size of new woofer

then put them side by side....
36" = x
10" = 15"

Now cross multiply
10x=540"
x=54"(wide)<--- your new side for 15 inch woofers

Now do it for each side....

so it's 45"x45"x20.25"? would u use the same formula to make the lines?

8=x
10=15        =12"?

did it sound good as far as SQ is concerned?

Umm...

Upscaling

    15" / 10" = 1.5
    1.5 - 1 = 0.5
    0.5 * 100 = 50%

36" x 36" x 13.5" + 50%...

    36 * 0.50 = 18
    36 + 18 = 54"

    13.5 * 0.50 = 6.75
    13.5 + 6.75 = 20.25"

54" x 54" x 20.25"

Edit:  By the way, downscaling is:

    Small divided by Big = A
    1 subtracted from A = B
    B multiplied by 100 = Percent

You can use a calculator with a % function or you can, say, multiply 15 by the resulting value negative.  Like this:

15 - 33.4% = 5.1 inches, not enough decimal point to come out to exact 5
OR  15 * -0.334 = 5.1

And don't forget that you will jack everything up if you don't remember the thickness of the material you are using!

0.75" * 0.50 = 1.125"  Obviously, you'll just have to use something close if you want to get critical about the volume of the internal airspace.  But then, you should be using something larger than 3/4" if you are packing a 15" sub!  Just use 1-1/4" or something.

good job Matthew.
you could do it like this too :
(new woofer size) / 10 = X
X = scaling factor
36 * X
13.5 * X
example : for a 6.5 woofer
6.5 / 10 = 0.65
36 * 0.65 = 23.4
13.5 * 0.65 = 8.775
and i guess you multiply all the "magic numbers" by scaling factor.

After all the math this box comes out to 54x36x19.5.  The sound quality of the box is amazing and loud.  I had these two subs running of two DLS CAD11 strapped pushing around 2000w.  However I reversed the baffle 180 degrees so the voice coils could cool better but this just created a higher cut-off frequency.  I was flipping through radio stations and I hit a talk radio show and the lower frequency of the voices were coming through the box.  I gotta say 200hz through this box kinda hurts physically

just a little sunfused.  it's 54" wide 36"deep and 19.5 inches tall? and what numbers did u use to make the lines? 2. 4 and 8?

i believe he used 3, 6 and 12

interesting,

1. how long did you have the baffle the other way b4 you flipped it?

2. what differences are there in music that really stand out to you?

if you were to build aother wo, and cooling the coils was not an issue would you prefer the sound with music with magnets in the sealed side or vented side?

exactly, the magic numbers are as follows

2 = x
10 = 15

10x=30
x=3

4 = x
10 = 15

10x=60
x=6

8 = x
10 = 15

10x=120
x=12

so the new numbers are as Adrian said 3, 6, 12.  However there is one thing I would like to try differently.  At the beggining of the horns, where you are suppossed to measure the 2"x2" square to start the throat opening, I wouldn't use the magic number "3" for the scaled up version, I would keep it at 2.  I think that the 3" throat opening doesn't build enough pressure in the vb2 chamber.  That's just me because I want SPL... however this enclosure that I built I used a 3 inch opening and it sounds incredible. Another thing, notice that I did not build it 54x54x19.5.  When buying the material you will see that this is a problem as that MDF only comes in 48"x96" sheets, so you cannot cut a 54"x54" that is why I used the 36"x24" specs to scale my enclosure

and the diff in sound when sub is inverted is?

I'd say the difference is a higher cut-off freq.  I could run my 15's full range and they sounded great.  It picked up anything 300hz and below
