Title: 36 x 32 SPL WO
Post by Jet-Lee on 02/08/07 at 14:17:28

I'm building a 36 x 32 WO out of solid pine 2x12's. Its sole purpose is SPL. The only reason it's not 36x36 is that I have to get it through my car door, because it will be my backseat for comps, and has to be removeable.

I've already got the wood rough cut, and the top and bottom are curing before I go drawing and getting the angles cut.

Thoughts?

what kind of vehicle is it going in?  Are you planning on modding the WO?

1999 Escort Sedan.

No mods, except the 4" reduction in depth(front to back).

I'll be removing my rear seat, completely. Then sealing off the trunk with more 2x12's, and firing the (angled up) WO at that.

I'll diagram it here in a second.

how about some pics, eh ?

There will be pics, don't worry.

I also want to correct, there will be one modification. The port/throat will be slightly moved to allow 1.25"x12" of port, instead of the .5"x12" I'd be left with otherwise.

Basically, instead of 2"x2" from the corner, it will be 2.75"x2.75" (A 2x12 is really 1.5 x 11.75).

we have our basic 10" 36x36 WO in our '94 Escort hatch--it sure peaks low--like 30-32 Hz!!  :D ;D :D

I would've gone 36x36 and managed it in, but then I can't get it under the shelf to the trunk area, it's just too big, so I have to keep it in the passenger compartment.

It's built, and LOUD!

I didn't get any in process pics, as I was racing the weather. Got it pre-drilled(yeah, never did that before), glued, screwed, and siliconed, then brought it inside to cure, installed, and WHAM! CD's skip before I can get it loud enough. Oh, and it turned out being 32x34, I forgot about the 11.75" width of the boards.

WOW. My wife said it felt like her eardrums were fluttering back forth and she had some trouble breathing.

I've got to get finished pics on here, still.

How do I isolate the HU  from the vibrations to keep the CD from skipping?

sounds cool Jet.
think of isolating a Hard Drive to keep you PC quiet. stuff like rubber band suspension to gel mount.
Soft rubber grommets is something you could try. I never had much luck that way myself.
( talking HD here)
I cannot not play the stereo with any bass at all when my wife is in the car, your a lucky man.

You running just the WO or is the trunk already filled up with 12's?  I don't care about max SPL numbers, but I'd like to know how low it goes.

It's got my old KFC-W2525DVC's in it, being pushed by the Xenon x600.1 (thanks again, 60) at 1 ohm.

It plays pretty darn solid down to about 38hz then starts a shallow drop off. A huge hump at 45-46hz (car's magic number). Audible sound clear down to about 18hz, but very quiet. It's only got a little over .5 ft^3 behind it, so I need to stuff it pretty good. I'm also going to run some bigger speaker wire. I've only got like 18 awg wire going to the speakers. I've got some 8awg on my workbench that I found last night. Will tear apart a pillow tonight and see about stuffing that chamber and swapping wires at the same time. I don't want to run it too hard with those small wires there.

I've also got to pull it out of my car anyways and make some more changes to the interior to get it louder.

Here's what I did:
-Removed bottom of back seat
-Folded backs down to bottom seat level
-Box on top facing into empty trunk
-About 6 inches of clearance between top of box and opening to trunk, 0 at bottom

So, if it's not raining again tonight, it'll come back out, seat backs will be completely removed, a couple changes to the exterior of the box will be made, and it'll be stuffed and given thicker wire.

The goal was to make a worthy SPL competition vehicle, for my area, but still be removeable for when I need to carry more than my wife.

Left pics at home.  >:(

Will bring tomorrow and post up.

I, umm...cracked my baffle, pretty bad. Speakers okay, but it really f'd up. Didn't get pictures(of the crack) though. Had to rebuild it. That was fun.

pine has grain, mdf does not.

Title: Re: 36 x 32 SPL WO

I didn't think 2" thick pine would split easier than mdf, which I can break with my hands.

Picture:

It's dirty. I'm sloppy with silicone and glue.

I'll get more once I get the outside finished and re-install it as it will be for competitions.

The black fabric is there, glued, to keep the polyfill from pushing on the cone. That's 1.25lbs of polyfill in about .5 cubic feet of space.

Post by Jet-Lee on 02/22/07 at 15:15:33

Ok. I'm taking this a step further. I've got 48 inches between door panels, 32 inches aft of the b-pillar. I'm gonna fill that with a monster WO. 48x32. It's 30% wider and deeper than a 36x24. It will be made from 2x12's as well, because this thing DOES NOT vibrate at all. That's one compliment I get over and over again, is the lack of box vibrations.

This is going to be nuts, and definately an award winner.

I promise I will get in progress pics, this time. First I need to 'go shopping' around the construction sites for the 45ft of 2x12's needed.

MWAHAHAHA!!!

My 12" WO didn't vibrate.  I 'painted' all surfaces with wood glue. ;D  Very solid when you knock around on it, no resonance.

That WO looks good, db.    What subs are in it?

Post by Jet-Lee on 03/07/07 at 15:24:14

Ok, I got the thing installed for showing this weekend. That was an adventure. I'll get some pics at lunch.

It's still the 34x32 version, just stuffed this time with 2.5lbs per cubic foot of polyfill, per speaker. It's a tiny bit louder, but a LOT tighter bass. Waaaayy less boomy.

I made the cover to take the place of the seatbacks to 'seal' off the trunk. Really, it's just used to kill road noise and as a second benefit improves the clarity of the bass, although killing SPL. For runs it'll come out, along with the rear deck speakers.

Pics to come after lunch!

My install:

Through the window:

Through the 'cover':

Through the trunk:

I made the cover with a .25" thick piece of plexiglass that a buddy gave me. It's not professional, not meant to be. It's just there to kill road noise and help the SQ a bit while driving. It pops right out.

Yeah, it's still really loud. Still have yet to get it metered, though.
