Title: CORNER HORN PROJECT X4 pics Post by wild_6_99 on 11/05/06 at 14:13:13 hey everyone my names Andy ive been browsing this site now for over 6-7 years, have made the wicked one, housewrecker, and was greatly impressed with them, and so has anyone who have heard them. I had got the plans way back in december for last yr (05), and in the mean time have moved, to a bigger house with a very large garage (my shop). Over the past summer have bought up pairs of Fostex 167e , Aurum Cantus ac165, and HIVI RT1C-A tweeters. and of course about 10 sheets of mdf dont come cheap either. :'( so last week cutting began, and last night i stayed out in the shop til 1:30am, i had most of all the parts and so started the assembly ill post pics soon as i take it off my digi, and remember how to post on here. <img_src*....somthing wasnt it?? ??? has anyone made these yet? and if so in what order did u assemble the frontbaffle parts "N"? ill post more as progress goes along.. :-* cheers Andy |

Title: Re: CORNER HORN PROJECT X4 pics Post by musgofasa on 11/06/06 at 12:57:39 After hearing Zygi's account of his first experience with the corner horns, I am dedicated to either building a house with a room for them, a shed set up specifically for them, or I am simply going to adopt a father with a room for them. I want to hear these things!!!!!! lol Hope the build goes well. By all accounts this should be the loveliest speakers you ever own. Let us know how it goes! Robert |

Title: Re: CORNER HORN PROJECT X4 pics Post by wild_6_99 on 11/06/06 at 17:21:49 ill maybe get steve to check this but am i the first to build these? as well after teh enclosure is put togetehr how the heck are ya supose to get 4 5" speakers inside,....yes there is the opening...but gees no room to put in a mounting screw.... any ideas? |
Title: Re: CORNER HORN PROJECT X4 pics Post by musgofasa on 11/07/06 at 00:37:36 Wild, What application are you making these for? If you are making them for a liveable sized room and you are going to be using them for personal space, I don't think it is optimum to put the 4 5" drivers in the horn. In fact, unless I am mistaken you have already cut the baffle for the 6" in the front? After talking to Zygi this weekend, my impression is that the version that uses the multiple drivers was actually flown like a proffesional line type speaker. Awesome quality when no directional element was needed (I think that sounds right) Anyway, if you are going to be using it in a personal setting, I think you would just want to go for the single driver unit here. I know that you wouldn't put 5 speakers in it if that is what you have on the agenda. I have no idea how many have been built, but I think the plans and the white papers (and from the opinion that Bob gave me) these things need to be in a "somewhat" specific room meaning the knee walls or an opening between them is pretty important. Do you have a picture of where they will be placed? Or are they going to be used for pro sound? Let us know what you got going on there. If I were you, I would definitely give Steve a call with any questions on these. I am curious too though? Has anyone else built these yet? Robert |

That is a good question. I thought I read in the notes too that the application could use multiple 4s or a single 6 or something along that line. Way to go for it Wild. I am sure many are eagerly awaiting your progress on this job. Great pics so far. |
Title: Re: CORNER HORN PROJECT X4 pics Post by gexter on 11/07/06 at 02:12:19 wild_6_99 I have not heard anyone completing these as of yet and your pictures are the closest to a build I have seen. I would never build them but if you have the room for it they would be a awsome project. I have pretty much read all the data on them and its awsome that you have taken them on to build.. I have to add your work is really nice, thanks a bunch for the pics. Your posts are really making my day! :) |
Title: Re: CORNER HORN PROJECT X4 pics Post by wild_6_99 on 11/07/06 at 20:29:35 im making them for personal use yes....and im making 4 of them so stacking them is a posibility, yes using fostex driver for one...set...and one as a 2 way ive also made 4 extra baffles with no cutouts case i want to do lil testing as a mtm or somthing like that....or further down the road think id like to try out the 4x 5" application.... but still prety tight to get in 4 drivers without ripping the horn apart. ill be putting them in room thats 11'7" X13'5" with 8' 6" high ceiling in the house there is also a 16'x 40' catheral ceiling....but it only has 1 true corner to other is doors and closet, opposite side is a stair case and the kicthen open concept i could make the knee wall there in the commercial application and because the speakers would sit on the 16' wide wall.....dirction of sound might be less crutial i can take pics latr tonight ohh im very unfimilar with tube amps call me a tube virgin if ya like :-/ cause i have not yet heard one and compared and by the sounds of things i should REALLY get one but well im gonna have some dinner and head out to the shop and assemble a couple more |
Title: Re: CORNER HORN PROJECT X4 pics Post by musgofasa on 11/07/06 at 23:39:31 Holy smokes! If it were me, I would do the single driver fostex first and then experiment from there to see what you think of the sound. Steve had also mentioned a special speaker for these a while back and judging from what I saw at Zygi's house, I bet it is special just for the horns. I am not sure about the room dimensions. I think that sounds pretty good. I know the white paper says that they need a cutout in between the horns or knee walls to create that effect. As far as how they would sound without that, the only person who could likely answer that is Steve. The accounts I have been given would indicate this is the best sounding design ever though so it might not be all that picky as far as the walls and room, but I sure wish I knew. Where do you live? I might just buy a ticket to take a listen when you get done! ;D Keep us posted your work looks beautiful so far! Robert |

Title: Re: CORNER HORN PROJECT X4 pics Post by wild_6_99 on 11/08/06 at 14:53:56 my house wrecker in my sound room, i made it with 1/4x 1/4 solid cherry beading up the sides to stop dents and mdf waffering, base is made from solid cherry as well as the top, veneered cherry of course well behind that will be the placment of the horns, and a big wall for 12 diffusers 2'x2' gonna be making almost 20 difusars, and 2 bass traps 6" thick pink fiberglass...cause the room is really LIVE , which is not a bad thing somtimes...but gets a lil fatiguing at higher volumes, so i thought id make the horns first and see how they sound...then add diffusars and absorbers is this the right process im not sure but seams logical for me |

Title: Re: CORNER HORN PROJECT X4 pics Post by wild_6_99 on 11/12/06 at 22:52:44 how many ppl actually have these plans? plz double check with me on this maybe i got a lemon i have some measuments descrepentcies on mine in many papers including the white papers for the corner horns , it says they are 24x24" footprint..... on the other hand my full scale drawing measures square 23 7/8"x 23 5/8" could this just be cause it was hand drawn? no affence what so ever to Steve(the master himself), just curious weather it was intentional or not.....cause if so ive screwed up, ive made all my layouts on all 8 panels 24"x 24"(its fitin together real nice tho) i tryed to referance back to where lines meet up and such, i think its just maybe the printing copying process as well... could be many things somone plz check yours plz and hopfully come to a good conclusion. i tryed callin steve a couple times now to no avail, but hes a busy guy im sure cheers Andy |
Title: Re: CORNER HORN PROJECT X4 pics Post by Mike W on 11/15/06 at 12:27:24 Andy, I do not have the answer to your question but it sure is very kind of you to take photos and walk us through this process. If I had a room that would be a candidate for these horns, they are what I would have. Good luck.....I hope Steve or someone can help you. :) |
Title: Re: CORNER HORN PROJECT X4 pics Post by serenechaos on 11/15/06 at 20:48:03 Hey Andy, Yeah, mine measure the same. I'm guessing it's from hand drawing. I'm also guessing it's why part "V" wasn't the "right" # of degrees in the template. (I made a bunch until I came up with one to match the template; I don't remember what it came out to). I measured the 'print, and found the sides different, and figured it wasn't supposed to be exact, but more of a guide to follow. So I decided to go with the numbers in the white papers. Just divided the angles out, (don't remember off the top of my head what they were either, but they where where the saw had detents, not between half degrees), and cut the top & bottom plates to just under 24". (I made mine out of baltic birch, and left enough thickness to veneer them). (Still haven't) :( On the internal holes-- I cut mine out, and drilled and installed inserts for the smaller drivers in case I wanted to install them later. I talked to Steve about it though, and he said that configuration was just for outdoor use. They are room sensitive. Enough I don't even want to write anything about them yet. I had them in (just over) 13 x 11 x 9 room with an alcove, built to the same dimensions as Steve's reference room, and was expecting great things. I'll just say I learned a lot about the importance of room treatment. After trying my HDTs, and a pair of ML TLs, and both also sounding bad in this room with "great" proportions, it's time to build traps & diffusers before I say anything more. Robert |

Title: Re: CORNER HORN PROJECT X4 pics Post by wild_6_99 on 11/16/06 at 02:05:20 well sadly enough i also need alot of aborption and diffusion as well , .... just dont got the cash to makem right now.....ive had the mdf for a couple months now.... right now doin the most cost effective thing without being bored around here (it gets real boring between fishing and snowmobile season, so biulding speakers fits right in for the fall) besides why the hell would ya wanna be outside in this weather...warm cozy shop with lots of sawdust how can ya go wrong :-* :D maybe im overkilling the curves but each ones taken me a bout an hr and half to 2 hrs but just got 1 left to do on the 4th horn, so then im onto making the back pcs and putting them together but more angle cuts to be made soon, ill post some pics soon. ill becontinuing agian next week ,,gone all weekend.. By sunday, cant wait to see the doors of the shop, to get started agian cheers Andy |

Title: Re: CORNER HORN PROJECT X4 pics Post by serenechaos on 12/01/06 at 20:08:40 fitting the compound angle cuts on the "wings" takes a while. the 'print and white paper again serve as more of a rough approximation than an exact template, and the builder has to fit not just compound angles, but to the curves made in the front, (which were probably made by eyeball with a belt sander, not fit with a template either). then four times for each speaker... a frustrating bit of hand fitting to say the least, it may take a while. Robert |
Title: Re: CORNER HORN PROJECT X4 pics Post by wild_6_99 on 12/04/06 at 23:52:11 hey all progress resumes once again last sunday got all the parts for the back all done and the internal peices...(fitting them was a lil tricky) this past weekend i was at the annual Woodshow in ottawa while in ottawa i picked up 2 more sheets of mdf (to make all the sail peices) ya ill be using a beltsander to do the curves (mounted on the bench with belt side up) with 24 grit ;D ;D ;D ;D pics coming shorty cheers Andy |

Title: Re: CORNER HORN PROJECT X4 pics Post by 60ndown on 01/12/07 at 14:33:08 wow thats a complicated build :( why 4? , 2 rooms ? |
Title: Re: CORNER HORN PROJECT X4 pics Post by wild_6_99 on 01/13/07 at 22:24:10 ya there pretty complicated but fun 4- i want to experiment with double stacked in 2 corners and well why make the jigs and everything for only 2....might just as well spend a lil more on mdf and make 4 hey if i move away(which is maybe in the spring) or somthing i can always sell 2 maybe to a few of you that have actually heard them before but my ears cant wait for the first "WATT" but ya ive gone through about 8 sheets of mdf if not more yes each one wieghts about 100 lbs im in the primer stages right now, paint goes on tomrrow and then a couple coats of clear, there gonna be white with sorta burgandy dark baffle peice(or part "n") ohh and by the way im at the 85 mark for total hours now for the 4 of them ill get some primed and painted pics up soon enough cheers ~Andy~ |

For really accurate corner horn plans (which truly are flat to 40 Hz, and FR charts are available), you could try Ron Clarke's Austin. The blueprints are dimensioned to .010", and I laid them out that accurately, with a sharp pencil. The lines meet up exactly, to a point in opposite corners. The angles are exact, much easier to build, no unnecessary complications... |

Turns out the blueprint place that made the copies of my original print used machines that distorted the copies. The actual footprint is indeed 24 x 24 inches. We have moved to a new address with new phone (309) 822 5255 and I no longer need my cell phone (309) 868 9302, so I got rid of it. Best way to contact me is at our new number. BTW, watching this build is getting ME excited [smiley=bounce.gif] and I'm the one that invented the damn things! Let me know when your ready for drivers. I modify a Fostex that is so incredible in these speakers it is without question the best single driver speaker I've ever heard... and probably ever will. Steve |

I do believe that is where I would be found were I the one with four of these beauties! From what I hear there is nothing like them in the world to listen to. I looked at floorplans with the wife this morning. I am constantly looking for a floorplan with a room that these things will work in. Does that make me crazy? I will build a pair one day even if my room isn't right for them. I just like this design too much to pass it up, lol Take care, Robert |

I'm totally with you on the room and these horns, it would be awesome to have the space to do them proud. I'd sure need to get the skills real quick as I had enough of a job building my BIB's and those were easy compared to trying to make Steve's horns. Title: Re: CORNER HORN PROJECT X4 pics Post by wild_6_99 on 02/18/07 at 18:36:13 At last your time has come, humble forum visitors and admirers ive been listening to them for a good 3 weeks to a month now many hrs , just to do a detailed report that and well maybe me being in my room after work , hasn't brought me to the computer so often latly i found out 2 days ago my username was canceled oh and yes ive got lots pics just need to post them after i write this big blurb my first set was with the fostex fe167 drivers my second was with aurum cantus's Ac165 driver with a low fs, of 32 hz ,and a HIVi rtc1a planer tweeter as to steves recommendations my original thought was to make 4 identical horns, but seemed redundant when there are so many drvers out there to experiment with My other intention was to use than in a high end home theater setup, but obviously didnt work because i have a pocket door in one of the corners of the room. i later on suggested to my landlord to take out the back wall and make an alcove, which leads into my bedroom, and close off the pocket door for a new placement of the other 2 horns which gives me a full 4.1 (housewrecker) home theater and with a switch be 2 channel that i could enjoy even in my bedroom but sadly was denied 2 weeks ago i bought some 1/2" thick ceiling tiles from home depot, the ones with comopressed fiberglass and a white film. i peeled off the white film and put 2 together, then covered them with a bed sheet i made 3 of them then last week i took another trip to home depot because i still had a nasty echo when i clap in the center of the room. so i bought a bag of SAFE'n SOUND Ruxul, i cut them in 24" squares to fill the top corner on top of the stacked horns. this made a big improvement in my bass response around the center of the room then i wrapped the remaining ruxul insulation batts (24x48x3") with another old bed sheet put 1 each along the side walls with a pair of the 1" thick rigid fiblerglass on top. this was the best configuration i came up with so far If ya see any problems in the pics or suggestion on improving my room, im all ears yes diffusars are coming soon, just rounding up the cash before i make the call to robert bury for 15 sheets of 1/8" and another sheet or 2 of mdf far as construction conclusions go,.....yes they will take alot dedication ive now put over 110 hrs into the 4 of them i think my biggest headache was using waterbase paint, a big NO NO in my books from now on. i thought i would try water base because i had never done a finish quite like it so..thought id give it a try. Laquer is to easy and well oil base even simpler because using waterbase it does tend swell the mdf in some places, Especially on the joints of panels D-H and K-F this joint is one that comes to a very thin feather edge ,and it raised up on me all the time....big pain in the neck, so my suggestion is to use ALOT of glue for these particular parts and yes of course use a oil base paint with a nice topcoat for my baffles i put on 3 coats of normal tremclad rust paint worked out to be a very hard finish and high gloss gives it a nice touch color was called wild raspberry, very nice well i think ive done enough rambling for one day, and im still hungover from last night ohh in the pics is a wicked one holding up my lcd, and my dvds it is for sale so make me an offer i built it was when i was 16 ..wow that was more then 6 years ago. well ill get on those pics shorty cheers everyone Andy |

Title: Re: CORNER HORN PROJECT X4 pics Post by DaveCan on 02/18/07 at 19:20:19 Looking good Andy, and it's great to see someone your age with the skills and interest to build something like these. Most guys your age atleast around here are all about big bass in their cars and how loud they can get etc. My glass is raised in your honour ;D,,well actually it's early so it's a cup of green tea but the intention is the same.. Good on ya!!! Dave :) |
Title: Re: CORNER HORN PROJECT X4 pics Post by Steve Deckert on 02/18/07 at 21:29:30 Send me those 167E's and I'll modify them for you free of charge just because you were the first to have the balls to actually build them! You'll be shocked at the difference the mods will make. Besides a perfect smooth midrange, extended treble, the bass simply pounds without ever getting out of control like it does with the stock driver. One thing you could do in lieu of an alcove is build a pair of sealed boxes between 16 and 32 inches in depth and from floor to ceiling. Places each box in the corners where the horns are now and place the horns in front of each box. You could make the width of the boxes as narrow as 24 inches but I would probably shoot for around 30 or 32 inches. The boxes should be stuffed with insulation to make them into bass traps. Ideally, you should use 3/4 inch MDF and in lieu of insulation use layers of 2 inch thermafiber aka rockwool or owens corning 705 separated by a 1 inch air space. (bubble wrap can create this air space) Here is a cutaway view of what I'm talking about - albeit in a different shape. This is a good alternative to an alcove. The space on the wall between the boxes can then be diffused, or at least covered with a heavy hanging rug. The rug should be spaced out from the wall between 1 and 3 inches. |
Title: Re: CORNER HORN PROJECT X4 pics Post by Steve Deckert on 02/18/07 at 21:35:48 Another couple tips that came to mind. You will want to stuff the hollow sections under the wings with fiberglass or expanded foam to eliminate that air space in the cavity. This makes a huge improvement in the tightness of the bass. Find some foam weather stripping and make a gasket so you get an air tight seal between the horns and walls. -Steve |

Title: Re: CORNER HORN PROJECT X4 pics Post by musgofasa on 02/19/07 at 00:39:36 oh man!!!!!!!!!!! I have just turned green with envy my friend. Not only do you have 4 of these monsters (in the configuration I was wondering about, you have Steve offering suggestions on your room and even to modify your drivers for free!!!!!! I am so jealous I could spit! Makes me want to buy a ticket to Canada! Your work is excellent. I can only imagine the difficulty rating on this project. I believe I have the skills, although not the tools just yet, but I have no doubt that one way or another a pair or two of these will be in my future. My question right now is which set sounds better currently? The AC with the tweeters or the Fostex full range? I really want to know the comparison when the drivers are modified.. By the way Steve, How much would a set of those moded drivers run me if I decided to get them first? (and maybe work on breaking them in a bit before I got the horns built? Take care, Robert |

I remember when I built the little speakers I have and the months of discontent and punishment I endured to just have them in a place where I could listen to them. G |

I can't believe I was even dreaming of building these. Way beyond my skill level. If you treat your room properly with some bass traps and diffusors you should be blown away by those world class speakers you just built yourself there sir. Corey |

Insulation wrapped in bed sheets. Sounds like a great idea for quick, easy to build bass traps! Is that working out well? I was dissapointed, went in a different direction. Maybe I just need more insulation/bass traps. I only used 6 rolls of fiberglass, and havent built diffusers yet. (And only 2 corner horns). Robert |
Title: Re: CORNER HORN PROJECT X4 pics Post by wild_6_99 on 03/01/07 at 13:05:30 robert the bass traps were prety simple to make...$35 canadian for a bag of 8 batts of ruxul 3" thick....and the ceiling tiles were $30 for the six...they made a huge difference in the echo of the room when places high up along the walls ya a bed sheet set was mere $15 from wallmart i may be moving soon so a 4 cornered room is a must and hey maybe even get the alcove.....going apartment hunting in a couple weeks and of course deaf nieghbours would be a good thing...lol the 2 way combo i have in the 2nd pair of horns....sounds very good...the extended treble is great and clean there are a few dips in the midbass tho....maybe 60-150 hz i dont have proper equipment to test it , but should have a db meter soon, ill get back to yas how i intend to fix it.....prob insulation..but we'll see cheers Andy |
Title: Re: CORNER HORN PROJECT X4 pics Post by DaveCan on 03/01/07 at 15:28:31 Hey Andy, did you seal all the gaps from the horn to the wall yet? It is suppose to be very important to do so, also are you going to take Steve up on his offer to mod the drivers? You've done such a fine job on those horns it would seem that the two items i've mentioned are a must to do them up 100%... Dave :) |
Title: Re: CORNER HORN PROJECT X4 pics Post by wild_6_99 on 03/04/07 at 18:20:54 im gonna see if i can get ahold of steve tomorrow, find out shipping costs and details about the drivers, as for sealing against the wall.....they are real heavy and well moving them...will be complicated....i also will be moving into the city in the next month or 2 ...back to ottawa.....hopfully find a nice room so they can permanently have a home .....and while i have them down ill add the gasket and foam up the wing chambers but till then....its happy listening ohh by the way...im looking into building a amp dvd player rack/stand of some kind (gonna use the left over mdf from the horns) .....if anyone has any challenging designs, plz post them im always trying to test my skills cheers Andy |
