Title: wo or hw or wo32 ???????????????
Post by shayneyasinski on 02/05/06 at 06:27:10

I have a large 1100 sq ft room with 14 foot ceiling.
I have lots of pro power ( ie crown 1200's x 3 )
I have pro xovers
I like a hard hitting kick drum so as of now i have 4 15'' cerwin vega subs in 4 cubic foot boxes that are sealed.
I like what i have but also understand that with my current setup i cannot play real low and i would like to go lower as it is a theatre room .
I have a table tuba and it just plays too low and when i ask that forum about making it better they say i need 3 more.
it is a bill fitzmaurice design that is basicly a 13 foot folded horn with an 8 inch driver that is freeair.
I dont like the 1 i have or the second one i fitted with a better driver so i will stop with that design and move on.

now what i think about the wo is that it is a sealed box with a horn so i would think it should hit hard yet play lower than just a sealed box??
the wo32 looks like it should sound about the same but a little tighter???
the hw is sitting in my shop with the glue drying as i have had this thing over 10 years and didnt like it cuz i think i wired it wrong so i put it away and forgot about it till i found this site again.
so after reading i pulled it out and saw i had did some modding so it is getting a restore and i will try it again.

so what do i build if i want tight loud low bass for rock, dance and watching movies.
keep in mind i would build one and if i like it build 1 or 3  more and stack em up.

thanks for the help

Hmm sound like you already have nice stuff compared to me.
but I always like to put in my two cents

tight loud low bass, I think the WO is the closest to that. Loud anyway!
may need a specific location and a low crossover point.

the WO32 is not loud as the WO generally, all things being equal.

The HWK is said to be the choice of HT. You would have to go big like the dual 18"

With your room, put those 15 cerwins in a Imperial two in each Imperial.
Then you are gaining the use of horn and an Imperial at that.

I don't know if they are only for sealed enclosures but if they also can be used for a horn or even ported that would be impressive.
with your room I would have two dual 18" Imperial subs in a cavity set back in the wall. some really sensitive 18" spec-ed for horns.

anyway thats my limited understanding of it all.

i'd have to go with gex. build two imperials, each with 2 cervins. next option would be 2 hws. again, each with 2 cervins.

i am pretty sure the Imps take 5 sheets. so its already a little cheaper.

Would be very sweet.  Maybe contact Steve D and ask him.  He defineatly knows his stuff and is more than willing to answer questions about any of his products.

I will do that.
I think i might just build them all and see what i like.
when i bought a new tablesaw i just new this would happen.

Definiately build the Imperials, I have 2 15" in mine and it hits harder than my 2 18" super scoops loaded with ev-180b's.

I am going to add another two bits

Of all the plans that steve has, not to many people have been disappointed with the Imperial.

You just gotta love a well built horn period......

Of course any plan can be screwed up as well. I am not talking SO's but Imperial subs.

I have long term plans short term plans and realistic plans.
The long term plan will no doubt have two Imperials.

how many times must i tell you !!!!!

read the site you moron :'( :'( :'(

that was me kicking my own ass.

i will be working on a set of these real soon.

CABINET SIZE = 28 cubic feet each.

Aprox Dimensions 62" x 38" x 28"

Materials need are 3/4" plywood, we recommend mahogany, and lots of carpenter's wood glue.  An air nailer with 2" finish nails makes life a little easier during construction.  Each unit takes between 5 and 6  4 x 8 sheets of plywood.

with the sub in the room, and at 1100 sf, I'd lean toward HW set in a corner.  It's A LOT smaller and less wood.  You can always build the Imperials later if you don't like the HW.  My .02.  post up pics either way! :)
