Title: scale down - relocate drivers *PICTURE*
Post by Jet-Lee on 11/01/05 at 19:58:56

What would happen if you scaled down the WO, to about 24-28 inches square, then relocated your drivers to the very front panels of the horn, so they're facing towards each other and somewhat forward? It would in essence be a regular ported box, but the ports would be the horn. The chamber would be 1-1.6 cubic feet.

Thoughts?

Only guessing
more SPL and more high freq problems
What about your volume?
Seems like a lot of work for a back loaded horn thats too darn narrow
Lots and Lots of variables.

I would not run a wave past the dirvers. You could port the front of the box. I hear that it can increase SPL.

Easy to try and fix.
The small boxes in the the WO are peaky and more fussy. they do seem to hit pretty hard.
There are many people that have messed with the smaller box in the threads with mixed results.
I don't have a beef with WO mods its hard to really screw up, thats how good the design is.

I'll be fabbin one up tonight. Won't be special, as it's just a "What happens if" project. But I'll let you know tomorrow.

I got pics of my previous boxes, and I'll take pics of this one too. I just can't find my damned computer cord.

whoooaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!

this outdoes my WO24, that weird 6th order dual bypass, ANYTHING! for these two tens.

I didn't get pics, left 'em at home, but I'll draw a scale drawing tomorrow and post it.

C ya'll laytr!

Get an active card reader and leave it plugged into your machine. :)

I lost that too.......I need one of those computers with the card reader built in......

I'd settle for a scale drawing so I know exactly what you tried.

size as scanned:

it is loaded with 2 of these:

Don't forget, this is in a 1999 Ford Escort.

EDIT - the entire box is 13.5" tall, excluding the top and bottom it leaves the rest of the pieces being 12".

It seems like you are closing in on Tom Danleys design.
see www.danleysoundlabs.com for more info.

Danley seems like good stuff.

I have heard this cab and it is hard to believe. A band with 8 vocalists used an 18" sub of some kind and a pipe attached to it with this cab way up high in a church on each side. I expected to hear nasal-toned, raspy, muddy, middy sound with no Hi's and too much bass. I was wrong! This design is clean and so powerful, it needs an 18" sub to keep up. I was very impressed.

Looks great ! and just as I thought it would look like, so your explanation was a good one.
I don't recall seeing that done in these forums before.
I gather that the SPL was good. What is the SQ and how flat and low?

thanks for the pic

I decided this was the box I wanted to keep in the car, so I took it apart and sealed it all up. WOW! It sounds 3 times better! The SPL is unbelievable. The SQ is better than my WO24, worse than my weird 6th order, but overall very definitive. It sounds/feels pretty flat from 90hz down to about 38, then a slight dropoff to 30, then steeper to 28. I didn't go below 28 as that's the limit of my subs and I don't want to risk too much damage.

I'm VERY satisfied with this setup. Have already started sizing one for my buddy, as my two 5y/o 10's now out perform his Rockford Fosgate 12's.

I managed to snag this pic of it.

A very intresting design!
Nice picture!
Im thinking about building something similar... Or maybe just cut two holes in my WO and remount the drivers in the new ones.
Its very fun when someone tries something different.

Cheers, Johannes.

the potential problem i understand with this desighn and others like it, is that the front and rear waves are not (or might not be) in phase? and they may be differently out of phase at different frequencies?

That was my main concern.

I thought about the speed of sound, 344m/s.

Line out a sine wave, of a specific frequency, for 344 meters. This simulates the wave from the front of the cone. Now line out a cosine wave for that same 344 meters. This represent the wave from the back of the cone. These would cancel each other out. Offset the cosine wave enough that the two waves line up. Take the length of offset, scale it way down, and make that the distance from the port to the cone. Problem solved.

Really screwed up way of thinking, but I've got NO cancellation of any frequency from 90hz (x-over) down. I used a CD I have with a sloooowwww sweep from 100hz down. I am thoroughly impressed with myself.

i guess you got it figured out then? your a better man than me ;D

Got it figured out, but I'm no better than the next guy. I'm sure someones got some big calculation using wavelength numbers, and this that and the other. I just figured...hey, speed of sound...do this.

I can't find any 10" Blaupunkt PSw1000's for somewhat cheap.....guess they weren't a big hit.

likely not much of a hit but still pretty cool looking. I would not say cheap but not too bad.

It was just a thought that crossed my mind when I saw the subs  looking at me like two huge eyeballs.
In my mind I even painted bloodshot lines on them!
way too cool   :)

The speed of sound static? now thats cool ;D

it looks exactly what  i had in  mind and searched for 3 months. i'l like to use it from 50 to 300hz. is Jet-Lee mode good for it? does anyone have sizes? i could't get it from forum.
my pm  aura2006@list.ru  :o
thanks a lot Jet Lee.
