Hi Decware forum, I am having some odd speaker buzz/static that I thought I would run by and see if anyone has any ideas. I do not believe it is a regular ground hum, it is higher pitched, almost like static and it is only noticeable at very close range—like ear against the speaker.

The odd thing is, it occurs when everything is turned off and unplugged. Unplugged!? The buzzing stops when I either unplug the speaker cables from the speaker or the amp. But, if I connect the speakers to the amp, but leave the amp unplugged (no power cable, no connection to the preamp, no connection to the DGR) I get the buzz.

Both of the speakers are doing it and I swapped out one SE84UFO for another and the same thing happens. My guess is that the amp is picking up some sort of noise or interference and feeding it to the speakers, but I am stumped as to how that is even possible—especially when the amp is completely unplugged and disconnected. Again, its not very noticeable and not something that is bothering me, but curious as to where it might be coming from and if it might be a very easy fix.

How long are your speaker cables? To me it sounds like the speakers cables are picking up EM/RF noise. In other words they are an antenna. I live surrounded by a "space-force" base that blasts EM noise so one of the many things I like about mono blocs is the very short speaker cable runs they allow.

They are 6' in length and piled behind my system with all the rest of the cords and interconnects. That was my original thought, but if that was the case, wouldn't the speakers still buzz with the cables unplugged from the amp? Or is there something in plugging them into the amp that activates some sort of antennae like quality?

You need a complete circuit to actually make the speakers move. If the speaker cables are just hanging then there is no current through the magnets.

Often grounding something will stop the noise. You can try attaching a wire from the negative speaker terminal to the transformer on the amp. Or just try touching the wire to other metal around your system.
