Hey y'all,

2 part question here:

1. I just recently learned there is a whole class of drivers called field coil that require their own power supply. After listening to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mhqw4sx7gBY this youtube video I am intrigued. My question is can a field coil driver be swapped in the same cabinet or baffle as a magnet driver. For example can I put a 15" field coil driver in a Zen Master OB speaker?

Side note: It sounds like the power supply of the field coil drivers allows QTS adjustments, similar to how the 10" open baffle zen master needs the ZROCK to adjust the qts.

2. Field coil drivers are pricey. I found some on a website called Lii Audio Hifi. It seems like this company is different than Lii Song but also sells the same drivers. Can someone help me understand what the relationship here is? Is Lii Audio Hifi as trustworthy/legit as Lii Song, are they the same company?

Check out Sonido drivers. They offer amazing field coil drivers and power supply at a reasonable price. Top notch. I built Sonido towers using their 096FC drivers and cabinet plan. I discovered them on DIY audio forum when Nelson Pass gave them a + plug. I started a tread on my build with pics in DIY Decware section on this forum. Istvan owner/maker is very helpful and excellent to work with.

I don’t have any answers to your questions nor have any experience with field coil drivers. At some point in the past I asked the same question about Lii here in the forum and don’t recall ever getting a response. I emailed Lii Audio and asked about Lii Audio / Lii Song and got the following response:

“We are not Lii Song — they are one of our copies.
Our company focuses only on special, high-end drivers, designed for professionals and audiophiles who value precision and quality.
We’re completely independent, with our own R&D, materials, and sound tuning.
Please support us by sharing our work and following our official page — every bit helps us keep making true specialty drivers.”

So it seems they are not related but who is copying who is not clear. There are some forums debating this around the internet. I recall seeing one on Reddit but it was all speculation.

I am a big fan of Lii Song drivers and have had several of their offerings over the last 5 years or so. The Lii Audio drivers have piqued my curiosity and I’d love to hear some first-hand experience how they compare A/B to Lii Song.

@Hearafter: Thanks for the input about Sonido. When I first signed up at DIYAudio the main guy there (Planet10?) was adamant about starting with a Sonido system. It looks like they may be making drivers for the S1WX audio systems as well.

@MM: There's definitely something fishy going on with two companies from the same region with seemingly identical products. I'd love for Steve to tell us why he chose to partner with Lii Song and not Lii Audio Hifi. Looking at their massive 43" woofer, it appears their is a photo of Devin Turnbull standing next to one of his Ojas speakers.

Alex Scott….yes the S1WX loudspeakers use Sonido drivers from Hungary. Istivan confirmed and said he was very upset that they broke his contract and relabeled them with S1WX logos and copy giving the appearance they were S1WX made. Not sure what became of it all? Looks like some changes/agreements have been made since my discussion with Istivan.. heres my drivers in a Sonido designed box. I used a different tower design due to my listening space configuration.
