Title: Oozing converters? Post by Tubecan on 09/27/25 at 17:48:25 Question about converters from 396A to 6922…I have 2 converters I use with a Western Electric 396A tube and some GE’s,today I went and got out my WE tube and there was humming and I noticed a liquid oozing out of the converter,I grabbed a GE with converter and also a thick oozy gunk all over the base of the converter ..how is this possible? I have converters of higher grade for my telefunken 83’,these 396 converters are cheap plastic, they put oozy gook in them, they Chinese, saving on copper? Oops,I’m looking online and noticed they come with labels..then I realize I have no labels, then it hits me…I used deoxit about a year back and the labels ‘melted’…hence the liquid my apologies to the Chinese. Still 18 hours per day.and not one inkling of ever changing this se84-25th anniversary amp..just plays music properly,no sitting thinking this could be better, this could be more, awesome amp! |

That seems like a lot of deoxit if it is actually leaking out the adapters, but it makes sense. Does the tube socket on top of the adapter seem solidly attached to the base? Another possibility is the glue that holds them together is melting. I have a lot of Chinese adapters, and (almost) never had issues. But I (almost) always bought from the same vendor who had a good reputation. One of the few times I didn't the adapter lit up my tube tester, with no tube, and I got my money back. |
Title: Re: Oozing converters? Post by Tubecan on 09/27/25 at 19:54:00 I’m remembering this was about 6 months back,I took all my tubes from 3 boxes and used deoxit sparringly and when I got to my driver tubes I was all tired out and remember these with adapters I went to town with the deoxit, pulled them off, deoxited, slapped the driver tubes back on and called it a day, probably didn’t dry and slowly leaked on the labels which then melted the glue and got into the sockets between the tube and converter, looks like the female pins on the adapter appear greenish, the bottom of the adapters look contaminated in that little centre hole that looks like cotton. Oh well. |
