Title: 274B for Sarah - which ones work? Post by saxguy on 04/17/25 at 14:46:02 I ordered a full Cryotone tube set for my upcoming Sarah. I wanted to try a 274B as well. Has anyone had luck with using this rectifier and which ones are stable in the amplifier? I know that the Sophia can be prone to arcing. |

Post by Tony on 04/17/25 at 15:05:27 I have gone through two of the latest version of the 274 Sophia Electric, and currently on my third, but using it less. I have not had any issues with other brands and have been most pleased with the Mullard GZ33. I would imagine that Cryotone would have a good rectifier tube as well. Good luck with your amp! |
Title: Re: 274B for Sarah - which ones work? Post by Lon on 04/17/25 at 15:09:23 I have a few favorites that include the Aqua II which this particular one has never arced for me in the amp. Another new favorite is: https://tinyurl.com/2m6857vr ![]() This is a big and bold sounding rectifier, warm but not a blanket of warmth, just a nice touch, dynamic and contributing to a great soundstage. It really works well with both of the 300B tubes I use, the Shuguang Black Treasure and the "sister tubes," the Linlai 7300B-D dream series. When I want a change I use a Psvane 300B-Z, a bit of a more "classic" sound, mellower and sweeter. And also an Amperex 5R4WGA, an even more classic tube amp sound is produced by this one, it makes the SEWE300B sound close to the Dynaco tube amp that my father used when I was growing up--a real nostalgia creator. I have had all Cryotone tubes in this amplifier but they were not my favorites, preferring NOS tubes. The 5R4 and 5U4 were my least favorites from Cryotone, sold those off quick! The 300B were pretty good but I prefer the two I use now. |
