ChatGPT for Music Discovery
04/12/23 at 02:01:18

After hearing so much about ChatGPT, I decided to give it a try this past weekend and my very first question was related to music discovery.  The recommendations it gave were pretty good.  I was familiar with 4 of 5 female artists and then I asked for more and got a bunch of new names—-going to give the rest a proper listen.  Screenshots below:

I also happen to be a tech geek.  That said, the sophistication of this AI is scary good.  It’s not going to be always on point, but the way it delivers answers in a conversational way is uncanny.  It gave a very reasonable answer on whether Power Cables make a difference in Hifi but on the very next question, I managed to trip it up by asking about an esoteric product like the UberBuss, and while it got the general product right, it erroneously attributed the product to GIK Acoustics and costing several thousand dollars.  I made sure to downgrade the answer.

Interesting, Kamran. I’ve been playing with chatGPT for a while, mostly science related stuff and testing its capabilities. While audio related topics have been few in my work, the few times I have it has mostly been related to gear, with mixed results on that. Never thought of using it for listening recommendations. Good idea! Qobuz could certainly benefit from upgrading its recommendations with AI!

Just tried a couple searches and it did turn me on to a few recommendations that I’ve never heard. Not the greatest but I do love discovering music that I would have otherwise never discovered.

Just curious if either of you use e.g. a streaming service or something else that makes suggestions for new music and how ChatGPT compares?

I primarly stream music and use Qobuz because I find the SQ to be the best of the options in my room/system.  The downside of the Qobuz is that their library is not large and their recommendations (at least with my musical tastes) are not good at all.
I share music with a large friend group, and Spotify seems to be the widely used platform amongst this group to share music with each other.  Although the Spotify platform is lower in SQ, their library is fantastic (I've only had two albums/artists that I wanted to listen to and couldn't find) and I find their recommendations to be outstanding.
In my tests with chatGPT last night, I would compare the recommendations similar to Qobuz, perhaps slightly better, but nowhere near as good as Spotify.  ChatGPT did provide a few artists that were new to me, but the similarity with the music I was searching for was poor.  In context (style, descriptor, etc.) it was ok but it failed to capture the human element and soul of the music it was comparing to, where I feel Spotify does.

Interesting, thanks. I'm not surprised, and maybe somewhat relieved, a specialist app like spotify makes better recommendations than a general purpose AI. At least for now...

Kamran,

You mentioned that sometimes you had to keep it on track. Hmmm, sounds quite human.

Similar to Mannytheseacow, I primarily stream and use Qobuz, though I don’t use their native app—rather the integration that the Innuos Sense app provides.  I have never really explored the recommendation engine of Qobuz, primarily because it seems like an afterthought, let’s say compared to Roon (their rec engine is superb, though I’m not a subscriber anymore).  I think Roon really excels in highlighting similar artists so discovery is easier, whereas you need to dig in to Qobuz.  For academic purposes, I’m adding Qobuz’s similar artists to Melody Gardot.  I can’t say it’s good or bad just yet, as I’m not familiar with most of them (compared to ChatGPT, where I instantly recognized 4 out of the 5 first choices as singers that I also like).

Lol, that was my way of injecting a teaching moment (and yes, very human if I stop to think about it). To let the AI know that it’s answer was off mark.  Let the machine learn from the error of its ways….
