FRX2 and Lii Audio W-15 Driver

Does anyone have experience with Lii Audio W-15 drivers?

https://www.lii-audio.com/product/15-inch-woofer-1-pair-2pcs-for-bass-compensati...

I have a pair of FRX2 drivers for full range duty, but in a standard open baffle, they need support in the bass region. I'll build the ZOB eventually, but right now, that's not practical, so I'm trying to fill in the bass the old fashion way - by adding a big 'ol driver.

I'm leaning toward the W-15 over the F-15 or F-18 because I think I'll get better results if the FRX2 isn't competing as much with another full range driver. The W-15 is designed to be an open-baffle bass complement to a full range driver.

I would prefer to run each FRX2/W-15 pair in parallel with no crossover of any sort.

For comparison, I'm also looking at the SB Audience Nero-15SW800.

https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/sb-audience-pro-sound/sb-audience-nero-15s...

It digs deeper, no doubt, but it's not as sensitive and I'm not sure it'll be as good a pairing.

I'll be driving these for now with a 3.5 watt amp built around 2A3 output tubes. When my SE84UFO25 is ready (perhaps around Decfest? Cheesy I'm 150-something on the list now, it's asking a lot), it'll take over.

I'd appreciate any feedback at all. Am I going in the right direction? Am I way off track?

Thanks!

Ryan

Is anyone doing anything with the FRX2 drivers other than the ZOB plan?

Hey Fidget,

Sorry I missed your question 11 days ago.  I too bought FRX2 drivers several years ago, along with ZOB plans, but then wound up buying Pure Audio Project Quintets with both Voxativ 1.6 full rangers and PAP’s beautiful wood horns.

The first couple of years I regularly swapped the three sets of drivers every few months for comparison purposes.  As would be expected, each pair of drivers has its own strengths.

For me, the FRX2’s positives are speed and transients—here they excel.  They are really fast!   They probably don’t have as much meat on the bones as the horns and the Voxativs do, but they are close.  The FRX2’s are also less efficient than the standard PAP pairings and can’t quite keep up with the PAP woofers.  The other thing is this; on the big Quintet frames the FRX2 drivers don’t image as well as the Voxativs and the horns. However, when I first bought the FRX2’s I through them up on 24” by 48” pieces of plywood, along with a single Eminence Alpha 15” woofer on each board, and they sounded fantastic, with excellent imaging!

I’m guessing that with a bit of trial and error work, the FRX2’s would also sound great with the Lii woofers. That’s my take on it.
