You don't need to make any excuses for Rubinstein. I've been listening to his Chopin for 40 years and he's a legend for a (very good) reason.

I guess I would say I respect the Cantatas more than I actually like them, when I'm in
that mood I usually listen to bits from the B minor Mass or one of the Passions. I forget which "day", maybe Reformation Day, he wrote that and BWV 79 for, but he really pulls out all the stops!
