Desert Island Scenario-must haves!

Okay so I apologize if this is a typical new member post. But, I like to discover new “greats” and hear from others. So, what 5 recordings would be the ones you must have forever if they were all you could listen to. You can add some honorable mentions!
1. Miles Davis Quintet
2. Radiohead OK Computer
3. Beatles Abbey Road
4. Cannonball Adderley Them Dirty Blues
5. Pink Floyd Division Bell
It would be a mellow stay on that island! I would miss my Guns and Roses and Metallica.

Myself I really can't fathom having even just a dozen albums only. If I had to curate really heavily there would just be jazz I'd choose.

If you are looking for new artists to consider I'd say look into Barney Wilen and Randy Weston  for a start if you haven't heard their work.

Will do Lon. I know. It’s hard to even think about 5 when I listen to so much music. I am fortunate to have a music enthusiast best friend who is always challenging me to branch out. Hence this post. Plus, some music is just for great sounding sound systems.

I actually think about this a lot, so here you go:

L.v.Beethoven , Missa Solemnis , Leonard Bernstien , NY Phil &c.

J.S. Bach , Well Tempered Clavier , Fredrich Gulda.

G. Mahler , Symphony #9 , Karel Ancerl , Czech Phil.

Bill Evans , Complete Village Vanguard Recordings (if I'm going to a desert island I want all 3 discs!)

Sinatra , Only the Lonely

Yes CAJames! I love those Bill Evans recordings. I found with classical I prefer the softer, mellower side. I do have a Beethoven that I enjoy. Will have to explore a little more down that genre.

The first classical recording I bought was Beethoven's 9th symphony, Sir Adrian Boult conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra. I bought that in 1977; I still recommend that one. Adrian Boult has artistic sensibilities in agreement with my own.

A Wagner Parsifal would be on my list; probably James Levine conducting the N.Y. Met with Waltraud Meier singing Kundry. I think that was around 1985.

Russian Church choirs are very much to my liking, especially the Rachmaninoff Vespers, or his Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. The USSR Ministry of Culture Chamber Choir directed by Valery Polyansky is very good with this music.

That is all for now. I may think of more later.

Thanks for sharing some of your musical tastes Brian. I would imagine a choir would sound great on a good system.

Some great ones and ones I’ll have to check out. I completely forgot about the David Gilmour On an Island. Been so long. I will have to revisit that one. Thanks for sharing Edwardt.  👍

I will sure second the, Elton John - Madman Across the Water !

I heard a snippet of Hector Berlioz' Requiem on the car radio today. That reminded me that it belongs on my list. With his Infancy of Christ Cantata.

I love Every one of these and couldn't have gotten through a lot of rough times AND good times without some of these. And inside or outside Ziggy Played Guitar! Ronson is probably one of the most overlooked Guitar players in our or maybe I should say "My Generation" Baby!

1- Television- Marquee Moon
2- Patti Smith- Horses
3- MC5
4- Exile on Main Street
5- anything Led Zeppelin
6- Jethro Tull- Aqualung - teenage guilty pleasure saw them more times than any other band and I've seen a lot of bands
7- Genya Ravan- Ten Wheel Drive
8- Pearl Jam Ten
9- Talking Heads- Life During Wartime
10- Joni Mitchell- Blue
11- David Bowie- Ziggy Stardust- need I explain?
12-there's too many -
So I'm going to lump together BRMC, Hole, anything Stones, Echo  and the Bunnymen, Velvet Revolver, Guns and Roses, T Rex, it's too much . My taste is eclectic - I could list hundreds.

Chopin Nocturnes - Arthur Rubinstein (1965, 1967 recording)
Handel Water Music - Trevor Pinnock and the English Concert
Beethoven Piano Sonatas - Mari Kodama
Schubert String Quartets - Buchberger Quartet
Bach Sacred Cantatas - Bach Collegium Japan

It’s impossible to come up with a definitive Top 5, but these are some of my favorites.  I’ve listened to the Rubinstein Nocturnes mid-sixties recording several thousand times—it’s beauty leaves me an emotional wreck every time.

Thanks Doug. A genre I know very little about. I’m going to give the Bach Sacred Cantatas a try right now.

Earthbound,

That’s the deep end of the baroque pool…..pretty heavy stuff.  I do commend you for your willingness to jump in.

The Handel/Pinnock Water Music is much lighter, a true joy to listen to, and may be a better place to test the waters.

And the Chopin Nocturnes with Rubinstein is simply the prettiest music ever.  That’s where I suggest you begin.

The Bach was nice but I’m not quite ready for that much vocals yet! I really enjoyed the Chopin. Definitely a keeper. Next on the list has some stringed instruments.

Do you know the Ivan Moravec Nocturnes? I like them even better than Rubinstein. If you care about the Chopin Nocturnes (and everybody should) you really need both IMO.

Re: Bach Cantatas. I think BWV 80 is pretty catchy and that would be my suggestion for dipping your toe "in the deep end."

CA,

A few years ago I set out to find a performance of Chopin’s Nocturnes that I liked as well as Rubinstein’s. After a week of listening to dozens of performances, I gave up.

I just refreshed my memory on the Moravec recording.  His extremely liberal use of rubato on these nocturnes drives me crazy…..to the point where I can’t listen to more than one or two pieces.

He was a great player, and I do own a few other of his recordings.

It’s back to Rubinstein for me.  I’ve always thought his last recording of the nocturnes makes everyone else’s efforts sound like child's play.  I know that’s ridiculous, but that’s how my warped mind sees it.

The Bach BWV 80 Cantata is a good one……and that chorale……..it doesn’t get any better than that!

You don't need to make any excuses for Rubinstein. I've been listening to his Chopin for 40 years and he's a legend for a (very good) reason.

I guess I would say I respect the Cantatas more than I actually like them, when I'm in that mood I usually listen to bits from the B minor Mass or one of the Passions. I forget which "day", maybe Reformation Day, he wrote that and BWV 79 for, but he really pulls out all the stops!
