Torii MKIV output tubes options
03/19/22 at 21:07:41

I think I am crazy and I definitely don't trust my memory..... but it seems to me that when I first first became interested in the MKIV the Decware website showed a table of compatible output tubes.  I've located a pdf of the MKIV owner's manual on the web and it only speaks of EL34's and KT66's.  Can someone clarify which output tubes will be compatible in the Troii MKIV?  Are they the same as the Torii MKV?  Thanks Decware family.

I am pretty sure you're not crazy as I remember the same thing! I remember a chart with gauges like a car... Besides the EL34 and KT66, I am pretty sure 6L6 was also listed plus one more I can't remember.

Sorry I can't be more help, but at least you know you're not losing it!

I’ve looked at that chart so many times it’s imprinted into my memory!
KT66, El34, KT77, 6l6, 350B. Those are the five listed and you can add 807, a 6l6 equivalent to the list.

The tube table for the Torii MkIV can be found about halfway down the page here. I tried all but the 350B and the 6L6 was my favorite:

Thanks for correcting me. now i'm wondering why they are not listed for the Mk V. I'm interested now because I have a Mk V on order but I am running a 350B amp currently so kinda excited with the idea of trying them.

Did anyone locate the graphic showing the available MK V tubes with tone, power, bass, and highs comparison? I have a copy of it if anyone wants...since it has apparently disappeared from the website link included herein.

From everything I've read, those are all very good tube types. Does anyone have a preference? Why? Thanks.

Waxspinner, I ordered my MK5 without hearing any of the tubes available, but chose the KT66 tubes because I have to start someplace and the subject graphic of tube "dial" tone and other attributes showed me that the KT66 would align with the sound I am after better than the other tubes...but I could be wrong...will know someday far in the future.
