EL34 to 807 socket adaptors? (Read 1664 times)

What sound characteristics are you expecting? I’ve rolled Gold Lion and Matshuti (sp) and they brought out the best of the Lii Audio Silver 10s.

Can't answer for the OP - but I have done this dance too. I find the EL34s to be crystal clear, which I love, but lack some solidity. The 807s are cheap and plentiful in NOS format, and lend (at least for my ears) a bit more body.

Will kindly sent me some Tung Sol 7027A's and they kind of had the best of both worlds.

I did manage to get some RCA NOS 807s this week, though, and oh my... what a sound. I'm struggling to find the right words to describe it - crystal clear but full of life.

None are objectively "better" than the other - the EL34s may be the _objective_ best I suppose - but each brings its own nature to the party.

Reading through this, I'm not sure any of it was particularly helpful, but I did want to respond.

The RCA 807s I have experienced have been very bright. They lack the little girdle below that hides the wires going down into the bottom of the tube. For whatever reason the National Union 807s sound more tube like; that "old radio" sound. RCA made a lot of 807 tubes for other manufacturers. Their design is easy to recognize because they lack this girdle.
